So, the other day my GF said she wanted to be a gamer too.

I have no idea what to teach her, she seems to like the Xbox controller a lot, so something that uses that would be ideal. The Sims is a no go. She is not going to play that.

Did you make that up?

Anyway, shes not into casual games or at least I don't want her to be.

It's from South Park. But really in my experience girls tend to enjoy many of the same games as guys. I know a couple of chicks who particularly like fantasy-themed RPGs (think Dragon Age, Oblivion).

Just play whatever you play that is multiplayer, with her. It's a fun bonding experience. I'd killllll for another girlfriend who was a gamer, had so much fun. Fusion Frenzy, Team Fortress 2, Mario Galaxy, those are some all around 'everybody loves em' games.

My girlfriend loves MvC2, L4D2, and SSFIV but mostly because I play those with her. She also loves Diner Dash.

This. I don't know that many girls who play games, but the two I know of like "normal games". One friend loves left4dead. My sister loves God of War. Try and figure out what genres she is into, then go from there.

Ok, thanks.

But what games are best for her to get used to basic gamepad and PC controls?

Maybe Mirror's Edge? It starts out slow enough, and I didn't find the controls difficult. It should also be pretty cheap. I got my copy (ps3) for $10 last winter.

World of Warcraft. Just don't get mad when she trades nudes for epics.

I haven't played that. It looks like you would need to do complected combos to pull of some of the moves or is it much simpler than it looks?
Much simpler than it looks. To do all of the fancy ninja running/climbing/jumping you pretty much hold down one button and move with the stick. It works quite well actually.

Plants Vs. Zombies and World of Goo though I don't think either one uses a controller...

Crackdown 1 has fairly easy controls for a shooter at the lowest difficulty level. Plus when you die nothing bad happens.

(It's too bad the devs didn't bother to include at least one female agent model.)

Plants Vs. Zombies for sure. Portal would be a good intro to FPS / puzzle games. Trine has a cute story and great graphics (for a side-scroller), and would probably be fun with a controller.

My girlfriend went from playing stupid Pogo games and Farmville (even worse) -> Plants Vs. Zombies (convinced her to try it, and she ended up loving it more than me) -> Portal -> Titan Quest / Puzzler World / Defense Grid / Trine / Half-Life 2. The only thing I can't convince her to play is L4D2. :(

I'm going to buy her Amnesia: The Dark Descent next. :D

Just give her any great game to play. Who cares if she is a girl?
