Games cause system to hang

I recently upgrade my CPU, motherboard, RAM, video card and OS (to WinXP). Now, whenever I play a game, the system will freeze and hang at seemingly random points and I have to hit the reset button. I've tried changing the video options in each game as well as in Windows and the BIOS and nothing changes. I've installed all of the latest drivers and the latest motherboard BIOS.

After checking on ATI's support site, I found the following in the Knowledbase:

737-217: System hangs, VPU Recover errors or corrupted display when using ATI PCI-Express graphics cards in ASUS Motherboards

The information in this article applies to the following configurations:
ATI RADEON X300/X600/X800 series PCIe graphics card
ASUS Intel 915/925 or nForce4 based motherboard
In some instances, when PEG Link Mode is set to a value other than Slow within the BIOS setup, users may experience system instability resulting in graphics corruption, video memory or VPU Recover errors.

ASUS has recently introduced a new BIOS feature called PEG Link Mode. This feature is available for both AMD and Intel based motherboards and allows the user to increase the engine and memory clocks on the graphics card.

The five user configurable options are:
Auto
Slow
Normal
Fast
Faster
By default the feature is set to Auto, which is the same as "Normal". However, the Normal setting still slightly overclocks the video card by almost 8%.

The PEG Link Mode value must be set to "Slow" in order to disable the overclocking feature, and allow for proper functionality. To set the PEG Link Mode to Slow, please refer to the steps below:
Enter System BIOS
Open Advanced menu -> open the Chipset menu
Locate PEG Link Mode
Change setting to Slow

The article is older (Jan. 2005) and I am running an ATI X1300 PRO PCIe on an ASUS A8N5X with nForce 4. When I changed the PEG Link Mode setting in the BIOS as indicated, it still doesn't solve the problem. There are no overheating issues on any of the parts either. Has anyone else had this issue with the ATI X-series cards and ASUS nForce motherboards? Any help would be appreciated.

My system:

AMD Athlon 64 3200+
ASUS A8N5X
1GB Dual channel Corsair (2x512)
ATI X1300 PRO PCIe
ANTEC 550W power supply

Well, since I was unable to find any resolution to this problem, I returned the X1300 card to the store I bought it from and bought an XFX GeForce 7600GT XXX Edition. More expensive than the X1300 but the performance is great! No problems running games anymore.

When I brought the X1300 card back to the store, they told me they are aware of the issue and are now telling customers before they buy the card! Fortunately, they gave me a full refund (no restocking fee!) since I was buying another more expensive card.

I have always used GeForce cards and this was my first (and last) experience with an ATI card.
