Games and overclocking

Has anybody ever had problems with certain games not working when they have an overclocked system?
I had my system oc'ed a whole 40MHz (8x105), and I couldn't even get Soldier of Fortune to run, and, Serious Sam ran like crap, had visual defects, took forever to load, choppy visual and sound.
I know it's no because the cpu is overheating, because I've played UT for 8 hours straight and no problems, and never had a problem with Q3A. Once I changed the fsb back to 100, to run at 800MHz, SoF will now run, and Serious Sam runs better.
I also had my vid card oc'ed, so I turned that back down to stock specs, and it still didn't work until I turned my CPU down.
Just a question I had, and wether or not anybody has any solutions.

My system right now is:
800MHz T-bird
Abit KT7-RAID
384mb PC133
Taisol CGK(something or other) hsf (rated for 1.2GHz)
7200 RPM 27.2gb Maxtor
7200 RPM 40gb Maxtor
SoundBlaster Live! Platinum
Asus V7100 GeForce2MX 32mb vid

Any help would be great.

Yeah i heard SS is really finiky bout oc'd systems. mine is a duron 700@920 (8x115) and serious sam runs fine but most of my games can run at a slightly higher fsb than 115 (117). to tell you the truth, i can harldy feel the diffence between 800 and 900. peace out.

I hear a lot of this problem... Does your problem have to do mainly with the graphics? Sorry I can't search it for you... but it's past my bedtime =P

As I said in my post, with SS, it affects loading time, choppy sound, and choppy graphics. I was only running it at 640x480. Even at the default detail levels, it ran like crap. I tried turning the sound down to 22khz, and turning of EAX, but that did absolutely no good. Once I clocked back down to 800, it runs at 800x600, 44khz sound w/ EAX, and all graphics at full detail, with no problem at all. It even loads faster.
As for SoF, this game is old so I figured it shouldn't be the problem. When I had my pc oc'ed, well, with the copy I got with my vid card, I was getting a weird error, even after all the updates. So I went and found an ftp with the ISO (yeah I know, pirating is bad, but I do own the game ;p ), and burned it. It almost worked a couple times. The first time it got to the first gray screen and froze. Next couple times, it got to the Activision logo with the animation before it froze.
Clocked back to 800 and now it loads fine.
I just wish I knew why, heh.
Unless it could be temps, but I doubt it?

Some games just put more strain on your system than others.. Q3 ran fine in my p3 overclocked system at 1.70v, but needed 1.75v to run Baldur's Gate stable (it's the truth!)

At 640x480, you're putting most of the load on your cpu. At higher resolutions, the load transfers to the video card (so maye it will run at 1024x768 fine). And if you see messed up textures or tearing in 3d games, it means the video card is overclocked too much, not the CPU.

As always, I could be wrong.. 🙂

I set my vid card clock back to default, and was still getting video anomolies.
Also, Soldier of Fortune isn't that CPU intesive (compared to SS), yet it won't run at all with my system oc'ed. Won't even get passed the activision logo before it freezes. Which would mean that it's not because of too much strain on the CPU.

I had a similar problem when I oc'ed my PIII 700E to 981. UT ran choppy at first then smoother after playing but I got a load of missing textures. I was using the same geforce 2 gts card that I have now. CS ran really fast btu no missing textures which is probably due to the fact that I use open gl with Half Life: Counter Strike and D3D with UT. I never changed any OC settings on my vidcard ever.
