Okay, as most of you gamers must or should know, by default Windows 2000 sets the refresh rate in games at 60 Hz. This is not a good setting.

If your game is a D3D game, you can run "dxdiag" in "Run" anbd manually change the setting there.

If your game is OpenGL, you have to install other software to fix it. There are two fixes for this. One is the Windows 2000 NVidia Refresh Rate Fix and the other is the more generic PowerStrip. The NVidia refresh rate fix looks the least-complicated to use.

So here's my problem: I've tried both of these programs and can't get my refresh rate increased in Counter-strike (OpenGL). As soon as I click on the shortcut, my monitor changes to 60Hz and doesn't switch back until the program is closed. I am running Detonator version 7.52. Has anyone gotten one of these programs to fix the issue? What version of Det are you running?

The nvrefix program works for me but I dont play counterstrike. Q2, Q3, UT, HL all run fine at 81.4khz/100, I am using the Asus 6.49 driver set based on the Nvidia 6.50 reference set.

I am trying to keep this consolidated now. I've not seen anyone talk about this issue with Win2K previously and I think it's a pretty big deal.

<< What I saw on this board and did was edit my nv4_disp file in the drivers, there is a section where it lists all modes and the refresh rates to be displayed in those modes. Scroll down to the NV15 ones and chagne them to the desired refresh rates for all modes you may use. Then when you install the drivers those refresh rates will work. >>

Does this mean you completely remove the 60, 70, 75 Hz settings?
I.e., here's the original line:
HKR,, NV15GL_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 1280 960 60 70 72 75 85 100 120 0"
Should this be changed to
HKR,, NV15GL_Modes, %REG_SZ_APPEND%, "16 1280 960 85 0"
?

EDIT: Yes, this works like a charm.

This worked for my ATi Rage 128, and now my V3, so I would assume it works for nVidia cards too. In regedit, under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE, do a search for TIMINGS. Click the + next to it and you'll get a list of all your resolutions. Under each resolution is a key of which refresh rates are supported at each resolution.

You can basically just delete all the refresh rates at each resolution that you don't need, such as at 1024x768 if your monitor supports a 100hz refresh rate you can just leave the 100hz key and delete the 60hz 75hz and so on. You don't need to get rid of all the refresh rates for every single resolution, just the ones that are used often, like 640x480, 800x600 etc.

Once you get done with deleting all them, you get to hit F3 and search for the next TIMINGS key. Do the same thing under this. There's about five or so that you'll have to do this on, so it's kinda tedious, but it works.
