Gamers: Win2k or WinXP Pro or Win98se? [POLL]

So, I've been using WinXP Pro installed as an upgrade to Win2k Pro for the past couple of months and I've had no real issues per se. It's been very stable. I'm not a real hardcore gamer, but I'm wondering what the OS of choice is and why for ATOT denziens that game quite a bit. CS, Ghost Recon, Quake II,III, UT, etc..

For me, since I'm running off of "mature" hardware ;) (see link in sig) I found my best system performance with Win98se, but the best stability with Win2k. And I like XP, but I'm not feeling like it's much of an upgrade aside from aesthetics.

I'd like to say XP, but unfortunately over 3/4 of my games won't run on it with any kind of stability. So I've had to regress to a dual boot state of win98se/winxp(corp).

I play all mine (I say ALL loosely since all I play now is mostly UT, RTCW, and the occasional game of TFC) on W2K Pro. I'd probably try XP if I thought it was worth changing, but since I have W2K I don't think it's worth changing for the time being since everything has been rock stable on W2K.

I am about to change one of my older machines to a dual-boot config between Win98/W2K so I can play a few older games that won't play on W2K or XP.

This is pretty much what I was going to say. I run W2K Pro on all my machines with all the latest SPs/updates. No issues. Occasionally, my SBLive! gives me The Dreaded Crash, but other than that, rock stable.

Are there are any appreciable differences in stability between 2k and XP. If there is, I'm not aware of it. I use 2k at work on my notebook ( Inspiron 3800 P3 500 512Mb ) and it's rock solid. I use it to game as well, although only in a bind since it's got an ATI Rage Mobility M1. :( But it's never had any issues. The only time I've had trouble was when I had Kazaa, Homesite 5, Outlook Express. 6 IE Windows, Trillian, 2 PuTTY sessions, and Winamp 2.78 going. Then it got a bit dicy and Kazaa locked up. Oh well, it still didn't crash the OS.

I run my games on XP Pro. I havent had any real issues, only with the older games where it is to be expected, which is why I dual-boot with W98SE and run them on there.

So you don't think that XP's added widgets cause a performance hit on your machines?

All of my games run fine on Win2k. I hated 98SE. It crashed constantly. And I haven't tested XP.

win98 is a POS.

WinXP if your hardware supports it. Mine doesn't have full support so I'm using Win2k.

I'm thinking a fresh install of XP, instead of an upgrade from Win2k would be a good idea. Besides, it's been a while since I cleaned house.

Not really, certainly not enough to make any difference besides I turned off a lot of the eye candy.

Dual boot 98/xp

98 is only on my system for those few games that won't run on the NT kernel.
