Gamers: What Train sims do you like?

I'd love to have a big HO train set, but I'm still subject to moving some more, nor could I really afford it, so I want to look into train software.

It wouldn't necessarily have to be based upon designing my own environment, though I'm aware there are such programs (having read some model train hobbyist magazines in the past). It does need to feature trains and their environments though, regardless of what else it's about.

I'm downloading a demo or two, but being on dialup it'll take a good while, and in the meantime, thanks for any comments by gamers who have a Train sim they like, be it MS Train sims or anything else! 🙂

If you like the driving aspect of train simulators MS Train isn't bad at all. Trainz Railroad Simulator 2004 is another good candidate with added support to steam engines.

Yet neither of the above offer much in creating a whole model train environment with terrain and rail layout. The A-Train series allows you to build a whole city, schedule various trains routes, and manage economics. It's kind of like sim city but focused on trains. A-Train 6 was released back in 2000 for the PS2, although the original one was released in 1996 for the PC/Mac.

It seems like Americans are never keen on trains nor train sims, though. Hardcore train sim fans must look to Japanese and German games.

Thanks guys. Surely there are still more train lovers to hear from?

I'm a train nut since I was little. Here is a forum I have been hanging out at since the mid 1990's:

Atlas forums

The only train progam I've ever played was the old Railroad Tycoon (2 D version). I've collected quite a few HO trains with plans to model the D&RGW in the Rockies in the 1980's eventually (in a small apartment now 🙁)

If you want a RAILROAD sim (running a railroad) RRT3 is out; TRAIN sim (running trains) try Train Sim or Trainz.

I'd probably love all of these games, but after seeing the screenshots and description Trainz is looking like a strong contender. It just happens that Trainz 2004 is the demo that I've been getting, and in a couple of hours I shall have it 🙂

And thanks episodic, for the links, as I'd not looked them up. I found the demo at the Nvidia demo download page.
