5.1 speaker system $ 100 or under?

None of the above?

Pick up some Audio-Technica ATH-A500/700/900 or the Beyerdynamic DT-770s. I would say grab the A500s and a sound card (should be able to get them and an X-Fi Xtreme Gamer for about $150).

The Logitech Z-5300 are probably the lowest I'd go for speakers (~$130).

This man knows what he's talking about. To stay within your budget you'll need to get Audio-Technica A500s and a soundcard. Pretty much anything will power the A500s, but an X-fi would probably be desirable.

5.1 headphones do not provide better imaging than stereo headphones for pin pointing footsteps and gunshots, etc. They might sound "cooler" if you don't care about sound accuracy.

2.0 sennheiser headphones give me the edge

I disagree, in an environment such that of a FPS, having 5.1 really does help because it allows for more directional sound, letting you know where things are coming from. The reason this is important is because sometimes something or someone will be moving and with stereo its very vague as to where it is while 5.1 can really help in determining if its happening behind you or diagonally, etc...

Point taken, but I'm more alert in the sense that if I hear ANYTHING, that's a sign for me to check my surroundings or tread lightly. 2.0 provides a little amplifcation than 5.1 one does, unless you have 5.1 on higher settings. I find it however, ear damaging when you get foreground sounds (IE Sounds close to you) on 5.1's since they are significantly louder that ambient noises and really hurt your eardrums after a while. 2.0's usually are more consistant.

both really.

for pub matches and general play, use speakers.

if you get into clan matches and tournament play, definitely need headphones. i'm assuming FPS play.
