Gamers-Depot: Open Letter to ATI

ATI ? the only company brave enough to take both sides of every issue and defend them both

Dear ATI,

2004 has proven to be quite a fast-paced ride for both you and your competition ? certainly, the available GPU prowess is very good and the entire PC hardware industry has a lot to thank you for ? certainly, ATI is a true pioneer in the world of graphics.
What concerns us, however, is what appears to be a recent pattern of flip-flopping on technical issues as well as a stark inability to deliver to the masses what you claim to be ?shipping in volume?.
...
First you ?launch? the X800 XT Platinum Edition...
Next up is the ?launch? of the X700 XT...
More recently, you ?launched? the X850XT Platinum Edition...

We find this rather ironic in light of that fact that your own Mr. Bergman said at a launch event in 04? that ?ATI will not announce products unless we can ship them within 30-days? ? so what gives with that?
...
...
Next issue many of our readers are concerned with is what appears to be flip-flopping on issues on such a grand scale that even John Kerry would be proud.

If your business plan is to really take a ?wait and see? approach then why not just admit to that?

"I actually voted against SLI, before I voted for it"

What are the chances Duane will be receiving Ati review samples next round? They already seem to have cut him off after he published those slides.

I totally agree with every word 🙂

ATI would have had my money if I could have found X800 XT...I went with a 6800 Ultra instead and glad I did.

Its pointless to advertise products but not make enough..or hardly any at all😕

Here is a new flash, NV "voted against" SLI at one time too. Its called PR. Every company tries to downplay a feature, or product a competitor has, until they get something similar to it.

NV paper "launched" the NV40 before ATi did. The X800 Pro's were available the same week the reviews hit. Its took months before any NV40's were avail to purchase.

BOTH companies have had a poor showing of top end (XT/PE&Ultra) cards. While I believe ATi had less XT/PE's than NV had Ultras out, there were both pretty hard to get when first launched. Ultra's still are not easy to find if you're trying to just pay MSRP.

You could write an article just like that about NV if you wanted to.

I remember my local CompUSA had PNY 6800 Ultras within the first 2 weeks of launch...BestBuy was full of BFG 6800 and GT's within a month......but BestBuy did have the box advertising the X800 😀

False. When the reviews hit, there are ZERO boards out for sale. They didnt not come out until after the X800's did. ATi "launched" two weeks after NV did. Your memory must be off. Check some old reviews to get your dates right. 🙂

Damn right. I wanted an X800 XT, I had to settle for a used X800 Pro. But I'm actually very happy with the card.

I'm pissed I had to spend an extra $150 over retail on ebay to get the damn XTPE!

So, when are the X850XTPE supposed to hit the shelves? March?

well, you didn't HAVE to. 😛

you could have just bought an X800Pro VIVO and modded, OR just not spent $150 for! (thats a lot!)

Atleast NV has picked up the pace. ATI seems to have had the same thing with every one of their launches. Look at the 6600GT for example. Atleast that card came out reasonably on time. Also the 6800GT seems to have kept those that couldnt get the top of the line cards happy enough with their supply recently. NV seems to be having some supply issues, but not the same scale repeatedly with every launch of every single card they release like ATI has been having. I give NV props for picking up the pace and filling the voids that have needed filled more recently.

Waaaaaaaaaa.

It's called a free msraket. If comapny A doesn't have product on the shelf, then you buy product from company B.

Nvidia was against SLI when 3dfx did it, now they are for it. 3dfx and ATI did dual GPU boards, now Nvidia does it. What a dumb thread.

Ok, you people need to read. He did not say that nVidia was any better, he merely said what ATi is guilty of.

Stop turning everything into a war between companies.

Yes, both companies did have paper launches this year, but the article is quite right in saying that ATi's high end cards are still paper, nothing more. You can buy 3 different brands of 6800U at or within 30 bucks of the MSRP on newegg right now; in contrast there is a single x800XT (non-PE) for 550 bucks and not one XT PE on the egg. Add in the x700XT (the card that never was) and you get basically a handful of nice GPU's that are sent to reviewers to make enthusiasts think twice on their nV purchases. Look around at the market segments and you see that for every price point where nV has a real winner, ATi has a paper launch. The 6600GT has no competitor outside the vaporware x700XT; the 6800NU has no 300 dollar fight except the X800XL, which likely won't around till April, and the 6800Ultra has the XT PE against it, and XT PE's are rare as hen's teeth. I really hope this trend stops soon - if you can't make the card in bulk, don't pretend to.

I'm writing a letter to Toyota right now. I want to buy the Prius at MSRP. I'm also writing 3dfx, I still want my Voodoo5 6000.

So demand otstrips supply, prices go up - things go out of stock. Don't buy one then. Don't be a bitch and write useless letters to get attention from net nerds. The XT PE is $40 more than a 6800U on Newegg right now. BFD.

Nope Todd, still not an XT PE, only XT. 500 on the core and 1000 on the mem. That's exactly the point - they send everyone XT PE's to review but only XT's are available. Thankfully Anand has caught on and pretty much only uses the XT now (like in the HL2 shootout) to bench.

Check the model number and box pic. Newegg has the wrong specs.

Ach, I have been foiled.
Still, I stand by my original point - their mid-range competitors at $200 and $300 are currently non-existent. Don't get me wrong - if they get 300 dollar x800XL's out the door in volume by, oh say, January, then we all win - nV has to drop some prices to compete and people get a very nice 16 pipe card (although dreams of XL's reaching XT speeds aren't going to come true). That's the point of the article and my comments; it's not like anyone is bashing ATi products...we just want them to show up. The sooner nV and ATi get more cards out the cheaper they get. I still can't believe I spent 400 bucks on my GT...my entire system upgrade used to cost that much...

I get the feeling Newegg has the wrong pictures, not specs. But hey, if someone is willing to try it, let us know.

Plenty of people have at other sites. All PE. It used to be $487 at Newegg. I was going to buy it before I got my new Ultra OC for $389. 🙂
