I find this whole situation barely worth commenting on. If they make my BF5 character a chick who tosses baked goods at the enemy instead of shooting them, I won't mind.

I don't know what's dumber, the gamergate phenomenon, or right wing sites trying to make political hay out of it. Tough call.

This is what I think. Journalistic integrity is an issue but not just for gaming journalism you can find it more broadly in other niche areas as well journalism in general.
However, when an instance of questionable journalism became a lightning rod for people to rally around... a small group of those people carried it too far.
I wasn't paying attention to it much but I've heard that some accusations of sexism were thrown around.
When Fecility Day was doxxed that caught my attention.
She expressed her feelings of discomfort about some of the happenings related to #gamergate and why she was reluctant to talk about it.
Then soon after some dick-wad makes her fears a reality.
As I said journalism that covers gaming isn't the only place where one can find shady practices but if I were to start screaming about the mainstream media then also started calling female journalists or famous people covered by the mainstream media whores and sluts I've just entirely distracted from "ethics in journalism" as my cause.
s for objectification of female characters in video games. Let's not kid ourselves just because a person cannot name some examples off of the top of her head it doesn't gamers can't. Let's not kid ourselves.
For every Alyx Vance or Lara Croft there are a dozen female game characters or npcs who are examples objectification of the female form in video games.
Yes there is a problem in video game journalism. However, you've got a small group of people doing heinous things while saying "It's only about ethics in video game journalism"
Like it or not that small group of people have made it more than just "ethics in journalism"
It's a fucking mess now.
And while ethics in journalism is a broad issue for the profession, rather than just in this particular segment. Anyone who thinks we can have a discussion about it now without a cooling off period and an effort to stick to an issue without calling attention to someone's sexual attractiveness (or lack there of) is fooling themselves.
Having clarified my thoughts I'll take my own advice and "Up the Shut Fuck" about the subject.

....

Again, did you actually check the reality of the situation or did you get your information from arstechnica or some other corrupted source. They have been painting a false narrative for almost 3 months now. A small group of people didn't carry anything too far. The press exposed themselves for what they were in a single day with their "gamers are dead" reaction and their behavior has led to everything since. They've been dog piling the population they were supposed to be serving.

Felicia Day is just kind of the problem. She was doxxed by god knows who, could be someone on "her" side for all we know, we've seen they have no limits on what they will resort to. One person even tried making a threat on 8chan and then responding to themselves, not realizing that while on that site they are anonymous their, id would remain the same
H1pPUA8.png

All the prominent members of gamergate have been doxxed, and they aren't famous people who are able to deal with this kind of stuff. Milo Yiannopoulos was sent a syringe, KingOfPol sent a knife, and they swatted him as well. Others have had their work places called trying to get them fired even. Is never covered which says a lot about this situation.

Felicia Day took an incident and based on basically nothing reinforced prejudice. She said "The fact that it has affected me, to the point where I decided to cross the street last weekend away from those gamers, was heartbreaking"
Now just imagine if she had said this about black people. Someone somewhere, some "black guy" did some crime somewhere or hell, maybe one actually stole her car. Then would that justify prejudice against an entire race? And that's the thing, the left claims that they are hypersensitive to issues of prejudice, but clearly that isn't true as we've seen.

And really, what is Felicia Day known for? Her existence points to the fact that girls who fit the image of a certain "geek girl" are actually not that common. If every other supermodel was a COD player it guys wouldn't have to fantasize about Felicia Day as their waifu, it would be just a given that most girls play games regardless.

As for "objectification", that concept is the problem. Its just a tool for sex negative feminists to push their puritanical ideas on others through shaming language. The fact is many of the games which are dominated by female players don't include any women at all, the candy crushes of the world. If a Bayonetta is sexy, and its targeted towards men, that is perfectly legitimate. This demonetization of male interest is one of the worst things to come of feminism. And really, its a strange reality where women are condemning game characters that other women gladly choose to cosplay at conventions because they enjoy the attention. I guess that's "internalized misogyny" huh...

And anyways, this was all started by a woman who has no actual interest in video games.
This is her game idea after all.
Anita Sarkeesian's Game Idea: Good or Bad?
Asalieri2
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PRYv73OeoGI

No one is stopping women from making the content they desire. Zoe Quinn did this, and it was so bad she had to give it away. Brianna Wu's game barely qualifies as a game. While Kim Kardashian, a woman feminists barely can acknowledge as a woman made her own game instead of complaining, and it probably made her a pile of money in the process. If a man had come up with a game character which looked and acted like Kim, I'm sure feminists would be throwing around "misogyny" and "objectification" attacking the developer and that is the problem. If one is going to argue that an image dis-empowers women, you are going to have to explain how Kim Kardashain is proactive, while Anita Sarkeesian spreads the message of victimhood and plays the passive role of trying to force others through shaming to get them to create what she wants. She spreads the message of women as victims, women as liars, women as manipulators. And finally she spreads the message of women as people who attack others through the system using false accusations as she did with thunderf00t. Objectification isn't the problem, if there is a bad influence on women its people like Anita Sarkeesian who's only talent is to live off promoting a perpetual narrative of victimhood.

And seriously, it is kind of interesting why the concern is only about women protagonists. The men we mow down by the thousands? Not an issue. If you want true equality you should be demanding to shoot more women in the face like we do the men. Not a comfortable thing to ask for? Ask yourself why...

And if these questions need to continue. Rape is several times more common than murder, so if the question is about representation...inconvenient questions must be asked.

What's more dumb than reflexive opposition? If a right wing site comes out against pedophilia are you going to touch children?

This black and white view of the world is a problem, and its funny coming from the left since this is what they always accuse the right of doing.

Ah, so it's oppression, when someone is not allowed to issue death threats towards someone they don't like.

The reality is that this is nothing more than a group of neckbeard buffoons who feel they need to 'make a stand' because they are being pushed around.

Underneath that layer, the truth is; no one is pushing these pathetic idiots around. They are witnessing a group of people who were pushed around and said group of people are making a stand for themselves. These bloated arm chair experts are frankly jealous because they can't do something similar for themselves.

Also, their rage is further fueled by the countless times they've been turned down. Well, stop being a pig (mentally and physically) and I am sure there will be plenty of girls who will go out with you.

These poor wronged souls are just mad at women because the last time they were near a snatch was when their Mom spit them out. For most of them it wasn't too long ago either. Now they're afraid these women with taste are coming after their virtual boobs.

Oh the humanity!

Dude, you aren't being persecuted. There is no conspiracy against gamers. Nobody cares enough about you guys to bother conspiring.

Some women made legitimate complaints about how women are portrayed in games. You guys freaked out and some disturbed individuals took it way too far. What made it worse was that gamergate's reaponse to those actions laid bare the massive underlying misogyny of the movement as a whole.

Trust me, nobody has done more damage to gamers than the people trying to defend gamers. Just stop while you're less far behind.

The "right" side here sure uses a lot of shaming language, sexual jokes and ad hominem attacks.

Anyone making propaganda posters for this issue yet? I want one from both sides to hang in my media room.

He's really dedicated to this gamergate thing. He's posted pages and pages of stuff about it over in the PC gaming forum.

I'm pretty sure gamers like him think of women as trophies you win for certain gaming achievements and not actual people.

That's funny. I wonder what the women in Gamergate would say about those statements.

Well, it looks like the sides for the Great Nerd War have finally been drawn.

Is this based on any actual data?

I can only say based on personal experience, as I have been watching it from the very beginning. If it helps, you should check out the hashtag #notyourshield, as most women and minorities seem to use the tag. Most women, it seems to me, don't want to be known due to "tit for tat" actions on both sides, hounding at their employers that they're supporting a "hate movement" and trying to get them fired for it.

Nevertheless, I could try to find some data on it if you would like?

Hey guiz. I hear a good way to not receive 'death threats' is to delete your retarded social media accounts that you cherish and keep responding to oh so much.

What was previously done via phone calls is now done over the internet. It's not the same thing. One can be turned off at any moment because it's not an important means of communication. A phone is an important means of communication. If you respond to Twitter death threats by making more tweets you are the squirting fuel to the flame. DERP DE DERP.

Plus, trying to toss in feminism in general with gaming is a recipe for disaster. They don't belong together, stop trying to mix them. Go play videogames and enjoy them, no one is going to hurt you... I was just at Blizzcon 2014. I saw tons of girls in all shapes, sizes, and ages that had no problems coming out in public to play and talk about games.

I'd be very interested, but my guess is that there's not much credible data available.

I personally strongly doubt 1/3 of the gamergate movement is made up of women.

Well it will take me awhile, so please forgive my late response.

And maybe 1/3 was a bit of an overstatement. There are many women in the movement, but I can't say 1/3 as I don't really know the amount of supporters in it. All I can provide however is a collage of many women.

Can someone confirm for me... because I can't tell in all honestly: Which side is #gamergate on?

Are the feminists on Gamergate side? Or against the gamergate side? I see both sides using the hashtag so I can't tell for the life of me.
