what gamepad do people always rave about? i know i'm thinking of a specific one, not sure what it is though.
i need one.

and on that note i need a joystick, i like my saitek x45's design, but the drivers are godawful and it's overkill for 1942
ms pulled out of joysticks, correct? i would have liked a precision 2 :(

nothing cordless, and nothing by saitek. thx :)

For Gamepad check out the Saitek P3000 or Logitech Wingman Cordless....or for something more basic try the Microsoft Sidewinder Gamepad USB

Rev, for a game pad I like the Logitech RumblePad.

Have an X45 for serious flight, Logitech StrikeForce 3D for lighter moments.

and your x45 doesn't give you problems? i find the programmability to be pretty much non-functional

I use an ol' Gravis Xterminator Digital Gamepad which I commented on rather extensively here.. It sports the requisite throttle slider to be truly universal. The Logitech Action Pad boasts this feature also so may be one to consider.

The X45 is nothing but problems. I use a Walmart $5 deal for BF1942. The X45 only feels right in things like Falcon 4.

For a game pad i use my Xbox controller - Best gamepad i have ever used

For a joystick i like logotech - I have the Extreme 3D Pro (wired) and the Freedom 2.4 Cordless joystick (wireless). I love them both. I had to get the extreme 3D pro because friends kept jusing my wireless joystick when playing games.

I know you said no Saitek, but I love my Cyborg Gold USB for BF 1942. I just installed the drivers and didn't bother with the software that lets you program stuff. Did a quick calibration and haven't had a problem with it since. Just started up BF and configured the buttons and axis'es in there. Very easy and haven't had any issues.

I have the Logitech Extreme 3D Pro also and I love it, works great for BF1942/DC (takes a little getting use to when flying the helicopters)

Downloaded latest drivers and programme from saitek? Installed software before plugging in hardware?

Even then, yes, it requires a lot more learning time than simpler devices.

Playstation 2 controller :)

I got a USB adapter shipped for $12. it allows 2 PS2 controls to be plugged in simutaneously.

I would recommend saving some cash and just using the control from your PS2 or Xbox and get an adapter for USB!

The Logitech Dual Action is a near replica of the PS2 controller, with a slightly wider base.

How can you fly without a throttle that holds its position though? Except for choppers it is something only altered intermittently yet would require constant attention to the secondary analog joystick.

I did a little more research and found an old Saitek Megapad XVI with throttle slider but not very favorable reviews. The Logitech Action Pad does not seem to have analog progressive flippers, but just digital on/off buttons. That's how I have to use my Xterminator for BF1942 anyway, but then you don't get a nice brake and throttle for driving games and instead have to use the secondary analog stick again. Having both thumbs on two sticks makes it impossible to then use other top mounted buttons simultaneously. Anyhoo, there seems to be an inordinate quantity of refurbished LAP's available on the cheap for anyone that want to give it a try (they are relatively cheap new too). But personally I like my XDG more than ever and lament their dwindling availability. It seems that lack of such a universal gamepad is a glaring hole in the market. I hope someone like Guillemot snaps up the stagnated Gravis unit and reintroduces it.
