Opteron 165 FTW (then OC it)!!!
If you don't plan on OCing then just get the 3800+ or the 4400+ and hell, you can even OC those too.

If its a gaming rig spend your money on video card, any of the A64/X2/Opterons will do well in gaming. Spend more on video and less on CPU

how much are you willing to spend? best is to get a new graphics card above a new proc.

but really, a 6 year old system? if you want a new CPU you'll have to upgrade your mobo, which comes with new memory, and the graphics card cant lag behind either...

whats your current system?

What is your mobo? you said your system is 6yrs old... if you upgrade your CPU it will likely that your mobo will not be able to support it.

an athlon 4400 will get hte job done in every game out there, if they say then need 2.5ghz they mean in intel number, so that would be like a Sempron 2500, whereas you are considering an X2 4400, which is way more then is required.

WildThane, do you want to overclock your CPU or not? You can save a lot of money that way which can be applied to a good video card(which is what you really need for games).

Even the X2 3800+ would be good enough for just about any game out there if you pair it with a good video card.
