Unity also has extremely high GPU usage, IIRC. I may be wrong, but I think Wasteland 2 used to use 100% GPU and would heat up cards like it was a power virus.

Yup, every bigger indie Unity game I've played had horrible optimizations. The frame rate vs visual quality curve is utter crap.

There was one game however, that ran flawless and looked impressive. Cities Skyline. But it was a custom job, lots of re-writing Unity.
 
It looks good, but it runs terribly. My 970m gets about 20fps average. It's not even an alpha yet, though. I expect poor performance from code barely cobbled together.
 
Don't measure performance based on pre-alpha... they literally only just enabled texture filtering, until recently they had point sampled textures.
