"As members of our loyal community, we wanted to share the exciting news with you -- Gamefly has officially acquired Direct2Drive today."

http://blog.direct2drive.com/2011/05/special-announcement-from-d2d/

Dunno what to make of this one, D2D was previously owned by IGN I guess, so it seems like a positive thing, I guess it'll just depend on any potential restructuring of the service they might do.

People seem to by and large like Gamefly tho, where as people seem to by and large hate IGN, so this news has that going for it.

Should be interesting. I became a customer recently with their 25% off summer preorder spectacular (Thank you for my cheap Brink, Dirt3, and SSFIVAE!)

Well IGN sucks and Gamefly is pretty good so it should hopefully be a good change. Though in the last few months D2D has really gotten a lot better with the quality and quantity of their sales.

Wow, first Gamespot buys Impulse and now Gamefly owns D2D, soon to be a massive war between the digital distributors.

I'm with SunnyD, I wouldn't think Gamefly had the cash to buy D2D.

Doesn't necessarily take cash to buy a company. There's always stock transactions and leverage (borrowing).

Okay, what I implied, based on Gamefly's whining to the USPS, was that they didn't have enough EQUITY to acquire D2D. Apparently, either I was wrong, or D2D isn't worth nearly as much as one would have expected (I would have put them 2nd to Steam).

They could be second to steam, but that's probably a rather large chasm compared to the distance among all the other services.

I personally look forward to the time one of them go out of buisness and the resulting havoc from its users.

d2d would be a big deal...they send you all the product keys via email anyways. I'm sure you could find a separate resource for the files and just use your key.

Is Gamespot some kind of inside joke? Cause they are a review site, Gamestop bought Impulse....

Or you could back the files up locally, because you don't trust any of them to support you in the long term. Steam maybe, but I expect them to get acquired at some point. Gabe can't live forever.
