Ben - It's not a matter of the writing the image backwards, it's the trouble of the whacked-out physical layout of the miniDVDs, IIRC. There's a larger than normal spindle gap. Images can be byte-flipped anyhow.
Import-modding a Cube is also something anyone with a Torx screwdriver, soldering iron, and toggle switch can do. It's a matter of closed vs open bridge. Unless you want the L33t front-LED region indicator ...
Either way, the PSO exploit + BBA is used only for loading games (slowly, buggily, etc) and homebrew code. And at the point where you're coding homebrew, you
know where to find this information.
