Gamecube controller was the best of all time.

Reasons:

Buttons logically laid out. There's a big fat *primary action* button, and then periphery action buttons

trigger buttons were a hybrid of analog and digital. They aren't concave like the PS3, are bigger than the xbox

analog stick seems to have a smaller dead zone and seems a bit more precise

I really liked the Gamecube controller, too. Unfortunately, most people were lead to believe that Gamecubes were for kids and never gave it a chance.

I can't stand the 360 controller. It is cramped, heavy, the sticks are cockeyed for no reason which causes problems. I adjust to it fine but I greatly preferred the Duke Xbox controller, and like the PS3 controller a lot more.

That brings me to my point for this thread that this is all opinion. What is good for you is shit for me and vice versa. I wish more companies would release quality controllers with different layouts and I am super excited to use the WiiU controller because it is nice and big.

I've always thought this layout would be cool:

^
< O > This would be the left joystick, repped by O, surrounded by the Dpad
~ buttons repped by the ^<>&~. I would also do the same with the right joystick where the buttons surrounded the joystick for quicker access and improved fluidity while trying to aim. Then, of course, I would also improve the shoulder/trigger buttons as putting them on top of the controller gets cumbersome after awhile.

This is really more subjective than anything, everyone has different preferences.

That being said, I actually liked it the Gamecube controller as well. Its probably in my top 3, but I prefer my PS3 controller most. Its light, I'm well adjusted to the stick placement and its not bulky. I prefer the stick layout on the 360, but the controller is fat for my hands and its a bit heavier.

Best controller: Keyboard+Mouse. :p

Not sure if trolling, especially considering this is AnandTech..totally wrong forum, on Neogaf there'd be more support.

I'd agree with you, but the remodeled 360 controller has taken the title now in my opinion.

.

Nothing...flowed?

It was the only controller you could hold down one face button and press all the other simultaneously.

A + B? Yep
A + X? Check
A + Y? You bet your ass.

They're all six and half a dozen of each other. Most modern controllers are descended from the Playstation Dual Analog and original PS1 digital controller. Which descended from the SNES controller. There are small design variations but most are fundamentally the same.

I personally loved the N64 controller the most... followed by the original xbox controller, the fat one... oh how I loved that thing! I never got used to the small one, but I really stopped playing console games at that point.

The Gamecube controller was just another ok controller. I feel like that's the best we can hope for. It wasn't bad, but I didn't really enjoy it much. Didn't like the button setup. The C-stick nub was terrible, as was the Z button. The Analog stick was ok, had a good feel but I didn't like the top.

I don't like the PS3 or the Wii controllers. The PS3's buttons feel mushy and the "triggers" are awful. It also gives me hand cramps due to the shape. Not a big fan of the analog sticks, I prefer the 360's concave top and like a bit more resistance. The Wii is just an ergonomic nightmare to me (it needs the Classic which annoys me). Even for waving around I think it feels bad and trying to use it like a NES controller just makes you wish for the NES. I feel like the 360 is the best of the current ones but could be better. Obviously the d-pad, but the shoulder buttons feel awkward especially for games that use the triggers a lot (really wish they'd have put them on the underside of the controller).

I still wish Nintendo had really just put a second analog stick on the 3DS and made it the big controller for the Wii U.

Reasons:

The only great thing about that controller were the shoulder buttons. I remember Nintendo fanboys were going crazy because some Sega person claimed the Gamecube controller was so innovative it was going to completely change gaming. Turns out he was talking about the shoulder buttons ability to click like a button and be analog.

Zombie Andre the Giant? I actually did not hate the original Xbox controller. It takes getting used to but, I actually preferred it to the smaller one. The 360 is better than either though. I liked the N64, but it feels like such a toy and not in a good way (compared to like the NES controller which felt like a toy but in a good way).

Dreamcast controller

/thread

I liked it at the time (and think a new one with a space to slide like an iPhone like its a giant VMU would be pretty cool, Ikaruga would be great), but was a bit too cheap feeling. I liked the shape (I really like that sorta handle feeling it and the Gamecube had on "wings"), but the buttons weren't very good. I actually did kinda like the analog stick but it wasn't great either. Triggers were ok.

The VMU was a great idea probably 10 years ahead of its time. Sega should take that idea and make it an app.

No telling, him and there's another guy that posts a lot of threads in the gaming forums that are...weird. I'd almost think they're the same person, just they didn't want to tarnish one account with their strong opinions from the other one.

Not sure what the bit about where he posted it, are the people at Neogaf Gamecube fanboys or something?

I've pushed more than one face button on like every controller ever. Needing to push all of them just sounds like terrible game design.

It was okay, did some things right but some wrong. The right, or C-stick, was too small and should have been just as large as the left one. The Z button was too small and didn't have enough response (the 360 shoulder buttons are perfect IMO). The triggers are nice, though I would like a little less total travel. The face buttons had a decent layout for certain games where the A button is a main button, for things like fighters and such where all buttons can be equally important it doesn't make a lot of sense.

Except for the crappy d-pad. Replace that and I'd agree.

even with the shitty d-pad it still is the best IMO.

would much rather have a shitty d-pad than 2 shitty convex analog sticks with poor placement, as well as awful trigger/shoulder buttons. (ps3 controller).

i do think the wii controller actually is very nice when playing games like mario galaxy. it works very well and i like that my hands don't have to be right next to eachother. but when you turn it sideways for NSMB or DKCR, it feels too small, especially the d-pad. i have a little cradle for it though that makes it feel a little better, basically makes it into the shape of a psx controller.

Yup, I still don't understand why MS has not fixed this yet. Otherwise still the best so far. GC controller was just OK IMO.

They haven't found a good way to improve the d-pad without getting smacked by patents. There were some stories about it a couple years back. Between Sony and Nintendo there isn't much MS can currently do unfortunately, even though they ARE trying some different things to make it better and legal.

If you're a gamer into hardcore Fighters gaming on the gamecube (which you aren't, because you'd be playing your fighters on Xbox or Playstation) then yeah, the gamecube controller kind of blows when triggering some crazy criminal symphony move with Ivy or the like with that giant green button and tiny side buttons. But for a lot of games, like Rogue Leader, it was perfect.

The Gamecube IMO felt the most comfortable to hold but the weird button layout and C-Stick made it not so great. Please the odd Z-Button placement as well.

Why can't nintendo design a controller that goes on many future game machines a la Sony with the PS1? The PS2 and PS3 controller are so similar that Sony must have saved some design dollars(Yen) since the PS2 controller came out.

The GC pad, while much better then the fetid abomination that the N64 pad was (awful layout rendered 1/3 of the pad largely unusable, awful analog stick, terrible balance; even more so with a rumble pak. I lopped half of the left grip off of mine for comfort and stuffed pennies in the middle grip for balance) it is far from optimal. Mainly the wonky layout and size of the ABXY buttons and the slightly recessed dpad made it less then optimal for quick tapping through menus.

Well I have not patented my design so if they want it they can consider it my contribution to the gaming industry that has given me so much entertainment in my life. ^_^
