Game wants to install earlier version of directX

Hi all,

I'm trying to install a game for my kids (Tonka Garage) and at the end of the installation, it starts up the
installation for directX 5. Obviously I don't want 5 when I have 9. But when I click cancel... it says the
install is incomplete and the game won't play.
Any way I can get around this?
Thanks

There a 2 reasons why the game won't work.

1: When you cancel the installation the game doesn't write itself into the registry (usually the last thing install programs do).

or

2: Game NEEDS DX 5 drivers and won't work with DX 9. This is uncommon but might be it. More than likely it is #1

Sometimes the program will ask you at some point if you want to install the DX drivers. If it does say no, not cancel.
If it doesn't ask then get a copy of DX 9 drivers and re-install them after you finished installing the game.

Let the DX5 installation start. It should popup with a error message saying you already have the latest version of DirectX, the install will then cancel itself.

I've had games do this and cause problems. It's really bad when they don't even tell you, they just do it and overwrite.

Install the game, see what it does (dxdiag) and if it's downgraded something reinstall dx9, you may just want to reinstall to be safe.

If you let the DirectX installer run by itself it'll stop when it detects a newer version.

The game should run fine on any version of DirectX 5 or higher; DirectX is fully-backward compatible.

You might have to pick the "advanced" or "custom" install to get this choice, instead of "standard" or "quick" install.
