Game voice software: MS Game Voice, Roger Wilco, or Teamspeak?

My bro and I picked up a couple of these badboys half off and we've been goofing around in Battlefield 1942 with Roger Wilco. It's pretty damn cool, but I'm curious as to what proggy is the most widely accepted and/or considered best.

Also, when using a stereo headset, much like ours, should one channel playback through the speakers, or the headphones? What's the de facto method the hardcore use?

ventrilo is the most used by cs players

*edit* and enjoy replacing those headphones in 3-4 months. i went through 3 pairs before i stopped buying them.

I'm considering hosting Ventrilo depending on how server/bandwidth intensive it is.

Edit - If anyone has a domain they are not using, I will provide a free hosting trial account to see Ventrilo in action.

Ventrilo, eh? Haven't seen mention of it.

And why did you go through three pairs of headphones?

plantronics doesn't make the best products, mostly due to poor wiring. if you check game sites like gotfrag.com you will see the number of complaint threads about plantronics headphones. these days people recommend sennheiser pc-150s.

to clarify, when plantronics headphones work they are indeed good headphones. i loved them when i first got them. but after a few months things just stop working whether it is the left/right ear or the mic. it's quite annoying when you have to go buy cheap replacements until you can get replacements.

Oh, well we're not terrible serious about the gaming anyway. The headsets were only $20 CAD each.

they are pretty good for the price, would be even better if they lasted longer but they will be great for bf1942 while they last🙂

We've just finished playing while using MSN Messenger. Voice quality was awesome, didn't notice it chugging the game.

Ventrilo, hands down.

EDIT: I'd also like to channel the inbound voice through the headphones only, and my 1942 thru the main speakers (I just have cheap one headphone/mic style for voicechat purposes only). I didn't see a way to do this in ventrilo, I would have thought you would choose like Aux-Lin Out in settings or something, but there is nothing like that. Would I have to enable a second sound card and do it that way? Would that even work or conflict w/ my Audigy?

Why would CS players use an outside program when voice is built into the game? Unless I'm missing something...

So Dead players can speak to the players who are alive in scrimmages or matches. Also known as Ghosting, tell others the location where they died, if they saw the bomb carrier, how many they saw, etc. It's a distinct advantage over a clan that only uses in-game voice.

Been playing BF 1942 seriously for about a year. Before that I played MOHAA. I use Team Speak with a headset. Have had the same headset for about 1 year now.

experimented with Roger Wilco back in the CS days, wasn't too bad at all, but not worth the hassle unless you're planning on competing.

that's only true for scrubs that can't win by skill. ventrilo provides a much clearer sound compared to cs ingame. i know from experience that what i'm saying through ingame is indistinguishable rubbish to other players. and really, it's useless to use in online games cause it isn't as if you can actually win money or anything of value playing online. the real competitors get money from lan tournaments where ghosting is not allowed so it wouldn't only hurt them to ghost during online play.

I remember CPL Europe & I think also WCG allowed ghosting in the CS tourney. CPL Winter / Summer in Dallas however doesn't allow ghosting (although a lot of european clans speak in their native tounge after they die & are in most cases ghosting). I'm not sure about the ghosting rule for the upcoming CXG tourney though. Ultimate Arena is where you bet against other people in a game & you play for money. I know a lot of people/clans that use chat-programs specifically for this purpose.

I've read that Game Voice uses Messenger - so what's the advantage to using GV over MSN Messenger's default audio conversation? My bro and I were using that and the vox quality is top-notch. I didn't notice any lagging while in-game and with the conversation minimized it uses less resources then Roger Wilco.

Well, it doesn't appear that there's a standard when it comes to online gaming voice software. Messenger obiviously isn't designed with online gaming in mind, but it seems to meet our needs.
