Game Theater XP now, Or wait...

I am looking to buy a new audio card. Basically I need the features provided by the breakout boxes of the Audigy Ex and the GTXP, so a regular (read:card only) Audigy won't work. I really don't have the money for the audigy, and the differences between the Audigy and the GTXP don't entice me enough to justify another 100 dollars. Also, gaming, while not out of the question, isn't the biggest concern.

My concern is whether or not Hercules is going to release a GTXP2 or something right after I buy the GXTP.

Anybody know whether or not there is a new card in the works and/or a release date?

Thanks for your help.

I think you should ask Hercules..

I was looking through the other DSP chips that the manufacturer Crystal makes and Hercules (along with Voyetra) uses on their cards, and there are some that offer Dolby Digital Decoding in hardware support, or Dolby Pro Logic II decoding in hardware..

so there is definately potential for improvement, but I don't know about Hercules' intentions. I hope they would make a more powerful soundcard (it would be nice).

my GTXP does everything i could ask of it already. A gtxp2 would just cost more money and probably be overkill for what i needed. If i was you- i'd get the gtxp now--- if you are in no rush, then waiting doesnt hurt... if anything its just going to bring the costs of the currents sound cards down... I havent heard anything about a new one in the works as of yet though.

No, Hercules MOST DEFINATELY will not release a "GTXP 2." Why? Because the current GTXP is capable for being a 7.1 sound card just with new drivers. Currently, their 3.02 drivers allow for 6.1 surround sound. (In fact, I'm actually implementing that right now).

I'm curious as to what you meant by you "needing the features of a breakout box" because the Audigy Platinum eX and the Game Theater XP differ a lot!! The GTXP actually allows for several options on setting up your surround sound. RCA and 1/8" audio jacks etc. The Audigy has the same and only 1/8" jacks found on sound cards (along with RCA line-in and the optical in/out....IEEE 1394 too but whatever to that).

My question is, do you have a set up like mine? Why would you "need" the breakout box? I'm not saying you don't need it--just if you aren't actually going to implement the features of the breakout box, then why get one? Maybe you'll use the RCA line-in jacks to connect a video game console to ??? I'm not sure.

Anyway, I owned both and am using the GTXP for the second time--only for the 6.1 capabilities. Personally, if you really, really, really need a breakout box, I guess get the GTXP for the $$ but if you can spare the extra $100 like you said, it's definately worth it to get the better quality Audigy Platinum eX.

Don't know if they are going to release another one or not but I can tell you this. I have had a GTXP for about 5 months now and I absolutely love it. Sounds fantastic in games or playing mp3's.

Wow! Thanks for the comments guys! I think I am sold on the GTXP.

Well what i meant by that is that I will need to hook up digital quipment (DAT's and ADAT's) to the card, plus hook it up to a 5.1 reciever. I know that there are non-breakout box cards that can do this, but I also like the felxibility that a box would give me with regards to amount of connections. As far as the differences go between the two, in the sense of connections, what are the differences? I realize the audigy has 1394 and only 1/8 jacks (Thanks Masterhoss). But is there anything else different between the two?

Also, this question goes out to owners of the GTXP, have you ever used the midi din's? How is the midi support? I ask because my dad uses a mac for his midi work and would like to be able to do it on a pc. But his current card (Vortex 2) doesn't really gel with his midi equipment, so if the GTXP works with midi well I'll just suggest that over some insanely priced pro-audio board. Any thoughts?

Thanks again for your comments, I feel more confident throwing down the money for one of these now.
