Game server and seperate map download server

I was playing on a CS:S server the other day and when they would change to a custom map I would have it downloaded in less than 10 seconds, where as usually it takes 5 to 10 mins. One of the guys in there said the clan ran two servers. One for game play and the other for downloading custom maps.

My question is how can I set up a seperate server to download custom DOD:S maps. My brother-in-law already rents a DOD:S server, what would I have to do to run a seperate server for maps.

Thanks

I used to be in a Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory clan and we did this as well. Basically, our Wolf game server was hosted by a company called Preygrounds, who did most of the inital installation and configuration. One of our other members had standard webspace with a hosting company.

Basically we just put the map PK3 files on the webspace and in one of the game server config files there is an option to turn on external map download, and point it to a URL, which we did.

So when a user connects to the game server and doesn't have the required map, they are redirected to the web space where the map resides and it is then downloaded automatically. If it doesn't exist where the config points, then it is downloaded (slowly) from the game server.

This is definately something you'd want hosted externally. A regular home DSL or cable connection can't really handle the number of users that might not have a custom map on a map switch and give them all fast speeds.

Who would you recomend to host this. What would be a good fast server on the east coarst that can handle the bandwidth? Of course that also isn't that expensive.

The host we used was great and if I remember it was $10 or $15 a month. I'll have to ask the person who got it who he got it from.

Make sure you can get file index access. We had another host at first that wouldn't let you view the list of files (non web files in a directory with no index file), and this did not work as the map file host, so he switched hosts.
