Game Recommendations for the "younger" gamer crowd

So I spent the weekend with a good friend of mine who happens to be around 5 years younger than me. While I grew up on NES/SNES, he really only started gaming with the N64 and PS1. This got me thinking, and I convinced him to try some classic titles. After I showed Super Metroid to him, he was blown away with the level design and gameplay.

So I wanted to post a few games that I would recommend to younger games to try, so they can maybe enjoy some of the classics us "older" guys remembers, and probably still play! It's not hard to either get an emulator to play these games, or pick up a legacy system locally/fleabay and play away. Please list some of your favorites as well!

1. Super Metroid (the best platform game ever IMHO)
2. The Legend of Zelda (awesome game)
3. Contra (classic)
4. Chrono Trigger (it's on the DS now!)
5. FF2 & FF3 (SNES - also try Chronicles for PS1 for 5 and 6)

Thoughts?
 
Any specific genre of games? I mean, I could probably list 100 if you didn't want me to narrow it down a bit 😉
 
Wouldn't exactly call you an old fogey but I guess he counts as "younger." 😛

-Legend of Zelda: Link to the past for SURE!
-Super Mario RPG
-Yoshi's Story/Island (whatever the SNES game was)
-Super Double Dragon (or whatever the SNES DD game was)
 
For racing games, F-Zero and Super Mario Kart.
All 3 Donkey Kong Country titles
For side-scrolling shooters, Super R-Type or Gradius 3
 
Mike Tyson's Punch Out is great.

Baseball Stars if they like sports.

OMG (super) TECMO BOWL IS A MUST!

Metal Gear if you wanna know where that game started.

Blaster Master

SOOOOO many good games back then.

I wasn't thinking a specific genre in particular, just classic games. Besides the "hardcore RPG" titles on the NES and SNES, I remeber most kids playing a lot of different types of games. Most games were "mass market" in that they appealed to many people, not just one group.

Sometimes I think the only retro games that get re-played are prequels of current games (e.g. Metal Gear) but there were some classic standalone games that were loads of fun.

No fighting games so far? There were tons of them for SNES especially -- MK, Street Fighter, Primal Rage, Killer Instinct. Granted a couple of those are still current franchises.
 
As the OP said Chrono Trigger is by far one of my favorite RPG's.

Any Sonic game (atleast 1-3...maybe Sonic and Knuckles)

I almost forgot about the Desert Strike/Jungle Strike games on the SNES/SG. Those games were a lot of fun.

Some of my favorite multiplayer games were the TMNT Arcade game and TMNT: The Manhatten Project. Had a four-player adapter on the NES and had people over all the time to play those two.

Also one of the best looking NES games for the time, IMO, it held up well until the end of the system.

Definitely an under-rated classic.
 
Streets of rage 2/3 , comix zone , All megaman's(not the megaman collection...they messed up alot of the level music)
alot of the stuff already said heh.
Yoshi's island.. show him Doom 1...
