Alright, gentleman, I'm gonna ask the same damn question you hear all the time. Which processor is better for gaming? Athlonxp or P4? I've heard the p4 isn't as good with games, luckluster performance. Fill me in!!!!

NOT AGAIN!!!! ahhhh!! nooooo!!

edit: in my opinion, its the instructions per clock mulitplied by the frequency that counts.
Not the label on the CPU.

Well......I'm no hard core gamer, nor are my boys, but, I have two AMD and two Intel systems here and to be honest, in all the games my boys and I play, I can't say that there is much of any difference between the two! I'm pretty partial to my two new P4 Northwood 2.2's..........but, that's probably because they are my newest! IMHO there is not a discernable difference in either at stock or O/C'ed!;)

the real world game performance between the (new) Athlon XP's and P4's is not noticable.. that's why you should buy them for other reasons (i.e. PRICE!)

Then you're sayin a 1.6 ghz athlonxp is not very noticeable compared to a 2.2 gig p4?

Here are some CPU's rated from fastest to not that fast (hopefully, this proves to be semi-accurate; the results vary because of platform):

Northwood 2.2ghz
Athlon XP 2000+
Athlon XP 1900+
Northwood 2.0ghz
Athlon XP 1800+
Wilamette 2.0ghz
Wilamette 1.9ghz
Athlon XP 1700+
Northwood 1.8ghz
Wilamette 1.8ghz
Athlon XP 1600+
Athlon XP 1500+
Wilamette 1.7ghz
Northwood 1.6ghz
Wilamette 1.6ghz

It looks like that....well kinda like that. But these aren't accurate, it's just what I think looks about right. The scenarios vary: on high-bandwidth games, P4 wins slightly...Quake 3 Arena is one of those games that has favored netburst for a long time. In other cases, where much computing is needed, such as with Max Payne and MDK2, Athlon XP and Athlon C totally own.

A 1.6GHz Athlon XP 1900+ offers the performance of a 2.0GHz P4, so no, there is not much difference between the XP 1900+ and P4 2.2A.

Now, if you buy the P4 1.6A or 1.8A and overclock it to 2600+MHz...and mate it with a top of the line graphics card, then yes, you will tell a difference (according to the reports on other forums). However, even then, the difference will be far from massive; it will be nothing at all like "night and day."

Personally, I think the $150 P4 1.6A overclocked to 2400-2600MHz, mated with the $115 Asus P4B266 motherboard, is the best price/performance available today. That said, all my current systems use the Athlon.
