-A book person can accidentally let a spoiler slip by what they don't say, or just in what seems like harmless commentary

You could totally confuse what happened in the books vs what happened in the tv show, the human mind can be tricky when it comes to memories regarding related topics.

I have not read the books past where the TV show is, I'm actually keeping my reading slightly behind on purpose. It's like a detailed recap. It is very nice to have a thread dedicated to the TV show with no book discussion, I appreciate it.

Tapatalk definitely does honor the spoiler tags.

Or apparently it was AT that was broken at the time which screwed things up in tapatalk. I know I spoiled some important stuff for some folks a while ago during the off season, even though I did use the tags.

Anyway, I'm happy to use the book thread, it's not really a big deal. Usually though, that thread is dead whereas the discussion is alive here. I think that's why a lot of book readers, myself included, participated here in the past.

I started watching GoT ~3? months ago. Comcast, in a random and certainly rare act of benevolence, offered to quintuple my Internet speed, provide basic (pure shit) cable, but also HBO, for only $10 more for a year. amazing, right? So, knowing that this show was starting up some time in the future, I started watching on BD rented from a local video store.

I only started watching Season 3 when that became available for sale ($20 at target!)

I watched them 3-4 episodes per night, before passing out on my couch in the living room.

I think all the previous seasons are available on HBO GO which is free to anyone subscribing to HBO.

Not to anyone. Despite their commercials, regional and smaller cable customers don't get it. It's a serious problem here.

yeah, I wasn't using Go then, and I've only now used it while traveling.

When I have the option to watch it on my larger TV, in real HD, I prefer that. Otherwise, I have to sit at my computer desk and stream it. fuck that.

I can barely tolerate content on a 15" laptop screen--and I'm only this desperate when on a plane and I have nothing left to read.

It was sarcasm.

There is a big difference between posting context and spoiling the story, as that Mongrol guy was doing. He was a jerk.

It seems that what the mods and a couple of posters in this thread want is a discussion of the show without any acknowledgement that the books even exist. No discussion of elapsed plot or character choices - nothing.

Which is ridiculous. You cannot divorce the two. It is a TV production of revered source material. LoTR, Walking Dead, and hundreds more. There are choices to made in producing such source material, and it is legitimate discussion. Deleting the entirety of any post which engages in that discussion is... I shouldn't even need to say it.

It's simple to achieve this. Only talk about the show. How hard is that? Why do they have to be connected? I could give two shits about the book. If readers of the thread want back story into the character, there is Google.

How can you know what you didn't lose if you never had it?

At the very least you can understand why some of us don't agree with your position, right?

I do understand not wanting to see spoilers, which is why I fully support using the spoiler tags, I just think separating the threads and making it so it's nearly impossible for a book person to take part in this thread is going to extremes. I do understand the necessity as some people couldn't understand when to use spoiler tags and when not to, it just seems like a case of punishing everybody when only a few are at fault.

As to the first part, I'm not saying I didn't react differently than I would have had I not known before hand, I just don't feel like it diminished my experience. It just changed it. For instance, you were surprised by the events, and maybe on a reread/rewatch picked up on all the foreshadowing throughout the previous books/episodes, whereas I caught them the first time through. Again, not better, just different.

Are you trying to make the argument that because you feel like you didn't lose anything from knowing beforehand that no one else should either?

Not at all. I only said that in response to techs' post.

so you're the one person anywhere that doesn't care about being surprised by content. You realize that because you are such a minority int he world, it shouldn't give you license to ruin what everyone else enjoys?

No, I was just giving my preference. However, I honestly don't get why people get so up in arms over spoilers, like it ruins any possibility of enjoying something to know one thing that's going to happen. I respect that people don't like them, but I honestly don't get why it's such a big deal. That's why I advocate spoiler tags, not ostracizing book readers. If you're one of the ones that doesn't want to see spoilers, don't look under the spoiler tags........

Any way, I don't get that--Someone that wants to know everything ahead of time, must be the type of person that can't follow anything that they are watching "what did he say? why did he say that! where are they going? what is happening?!?!" just watch the damn movie and stfu! :D

Must suck to be so thoroughly confused by things that one must have full knowledge before going on.

Yeah, that's not me. I'm the one telling others to STFU half the time. I have absolutely no problem following television or books, I just enjoy knowing what's coming ahead of time, for the reasons I stated above.

Now, that is not to say that I can't watch or read anything while having prior knowledge--I watch movies and shows and read books multiple times if I like them. Yes, you certainly enjoy it a little less from the standpoint of surprise no longer being possible, but you do get to notice those little hints, or other plot points and moments that slipped by before, which is a very different type of appreciation that you couldn't have before.

BUT! there is a book thread that, as far as I assume, also covers the show? why not speculate there? :\

My point is why do you have to? I totally understand TV people that don't want to know what's coming in the books, but have you been to the book thread? It's barely moving and the discussion could be so much more lively if it were here and people just used spoiler tags. There is absolutely zero reason to put anything that happens in the show under spoiler tags because if it's already aired its fair game, so it "should" be obvious that anything under a spoiler tag is from the books. My original point was just that people are getting too worked up over the spoilers (the few that I saw) and now we seem to have gone into overkill on the spoiler-avoidance rule. Just punish the ones that can't use spoiler tags instead of basically making all the book readers either leave this thread or be scared to post anything for fear they might give something away, whether it's under spoiler tags or not.............

well, as far as I understand it, anything that has already aired, Eastern US time, is fair game and doesn't need a spoiler. I see your point with how if that were followed, all things in spoiler tags should be assumed form the books. But no one follows those rules anyway, so it's just confusing. The only way to "fix" that is to simply say that no book discussion is allowed.

as mentioned earlier, it's also difficult, sometimes, for people to distinguish between was shown in the show vs what has happened in the book, as the order seems to have been switched around a bit in certain places. That is very understandable.

This thread follows a weekly trend--early week: talking about the episode and proposing various theories. By late Monday, already we have spoiler accusations.

Tuesday to Wednesday, more detailed theory after multiple viewings of previous episode and recounting events in past episodes.

By late Thursday, everyone is bored with the last episode, so we return to discussing trolling issues and spoiler issues between the TV viewer Master Race people and the Book-reading Troll Race people.

And no, of course I've never been in the book thread. Several of them have been in here actively trying to ruin everything for everyone, so why would I stumble in there? Plus, I will never read these books so I wouldn't give two turds for that information.

I avoided this thread up until several weeks ago after I had finished season 3. Wasn't sure if I'd ever watch the series, but why wreck it before I even gave myself a chance?

Let's get back to the show.

Is the actress who plays Shae still doing porn while on the show?

I couldn't remember if you said you'd read the books or not, that's why I asked.

Anyway, like techs said, we can get back on-topic. Sorry for the mild rants...................

If anything, this argument supports posting book spoilers in this thread, because the show doesn't necessarily follow the books. I honestly think people get too worked up over spoilers, anyway. Who cares if you know what's coming, does that really diminish seeing it happen? It really goes too far to say you have to put stuff in spoiler tags for the last aired episode! If you don't want to be spoiled on something that has already aired, stay out of the thread.

Of course, I have a weird way of watching shows and movies anyway. I almost always read what happens in a given show or movie before watching it. If I know where the show is going then I tend to catch subtle hints and foreshadowing that I may have otherwise missed.

There is/was a pretty major "whodunit?" going on now. You'd feel like you're wasting your time watching at all if someone spoils who did it.

Are you serious?????

I will just type two words that destroy your argument:
Red Wedding

No kidding. I was all hyped for Robb's bold plan to take Casterly Rock while Tywin was away in King's Landing. The "oh shit" moment for me is when Caitlyn noticed Roose Bolton was wearing chain mail under his clothes and they started playing Rains of Castamere.

So Roose spoiled it for you; he's such a troll.

Melisandre spoiled it to with her leeches. She's spoiled several deaths.

You also started watching it a few years too late. Plus, could you agree that despite knowing the characters would survive, you still enjoyed the movie? Here is a spoiler: Bruce Willis survives every Die Hard movie, including any future ones! The boat sinks and 99% of the people die at the end of Titanic!

If you are adverse to spoilers, partaking in conversations about the 3rd season of something in which you've not seen the first, is a bit silly.

Doesn't fly. You KNOW that this show in particular is not afraid to kill major beloved characters.

Anyway, CZroe witnessed that comment in the movies/TV thread after someone said he had just started watching Season 1. It was a total thoughtless spoiler for the member it was directed at. If it had been in this thread, it would have been OK because you shouldn't be reading this far in the thread until you've caught up with the series.

And how dare we criticize the producers for the choices that they have made, post facto, on presenting the source material - you know, the way every other discussion thread of every other similar tv show has ever done.

Ive been posting here since 1998, under two different user names (because I lost my login info about 10 years ago).

This is the first time I have been absolutely embarressed by the mentality of the mods.
There's a thread where you are absolutely free to do that. :colbert:

Exactly. Basically, the mods are excluding anyone who has read the books and is a fan of the show from being able to participate in the discussion. Only the cool kids at this lunch table!

Sucks the fun out of the show, and some good discussion.

I would never spoil future events. That is douchebag level. But discussing the effect on the show of eliminating a character from an already aired episode... thats pretty much discussion 101 for this type of show.
Wrong. There is a thread for this. Why do you need TWO threads?

Obviously, you would be happier participating in that thread. Why don't you try it now?

You're welcome.

This is not hyperbole. I come round to the Red Wedding that evening, and at that moment, just as you know it's happen, I actually freaked out a bit. I got angry. Thought, oh, she's going to escape, that dog is escaping and will run in there....er, she's going to hide. Then they get more stabby stabby on Rob, then on mom, and I stand up from my prone position on the couch and almost pushed my plasma off the stand. I actually grabbed the thing before stopping myself--I was angry.

A lot of TV-connecting streaming devices support HBO Go. I already know you'd be opposed to Apple TV. Does anyone know if PS3 / Roku / Fire TV / Chromecast supports it?

Chromecast is only $35, by the way...

I'm still haunted by a spoiler I read around the time of the Red Wedding. It's still spoiling future unaired episodes for me even now :(

PS3 and XBox 360 have HBO Go and I think Roku does as well. Amazon Fire TV is supposed to get it by the end of the year . HBO Go apparently supports ChromeCast via iOS, Andriod and Web apps: http://chrome.blogspot.com/2013/11/hbo-go-now-works-with-chromecast.html

Edit: PS3 just got HBO Go LAST MONTH. They are so freaking slow getting that app to new platforms. Good luck seeing it on PS4 or XBox One any time soon. Hope I'm wrong, but...
