One thing I was wondering about was Jon Snow's wolf, ghost.

It never showed it traveling with him as he went to the wall.

It changes per episode, based on where they focus that episode.
Honestly I think when they change character focus, they should bridge the cuts with a reference to the map. I think non-readers (my wife and my friends wife) are having a hard time figuring out where things are happening and the relationships between it all.

In the books they would let the wolves go off on their own to hunt, and the wolves would always find their way back to their master

I know but they didn't show him at all, want to see if they did him right.

I don't enjoy spending several days of my time reading something that isn't all that rewarding. There are plenty of great fantasy series out there which are deep, well-paced, vibrant, and actually enjoyable to read. And many of them, unlike Game of Therones, don't have sex scenes written in a manner that makes one think the author is a 16 year old hormone-crazed virgin. It's strange to write with a cold style 99% of the time and then turn into a porn writer for the remaining 1%.

I was referring to your odd phrasing: "I only read Game of Thrones because I didn't like the way Martin writes".

Regarding the dire wolves:

Don't they become less prominent in the later books? So realizing that, they know not to give them a lot of attention in the first season. Plus outside of a few key situations (like saving Bran from the assassin, attacking Joffrey, etc) they seemed to be mostly fluff in the first book IIRC.

Ah, got it. I was trying to note that I stopped after the first book for those reasons, though I had assumed I would read many of the books before I began doing so.

People must be reading a different book (and genre in general) than I am if they think that the sex scenes weren't a little too much like a novel with Fabio on the cover. I can't speak to the subsequent novels as I didn't care enough to read them, but Game of Thrones was definitely hormonal at times.

Jon's is really the only one they kinda focus on so that's why I was wondering.

If you have HBO GO it will pop up character explanations, maps, etc. as you watch. Really helps for a second viewing.

ah, gotcha.

Overall I thought the sex was explicit but pretty sparse. Probably jarring if you're used to traditional fantasy novels though.

Yes; though I would argue that the fantasy genre in general has this problem. I was expecting more from a highly acclaimed novel. Still, that was one tiny part of the overall picture of the writing style that didn't do it for me.

I was thinking the same as I was watching the 2nd episode and rewatching it again later that night. The 2nd time around, I thought I caught a glimpse of ghost in the scene with Tyrion and Jon camping with the new members of the Watch. At the very beginning of the scene, with the wide angle shot of the camp site, I thought I saw a white albino wolf.

In my opinion, episode 2 was really great. I felt the 1st episode may have been a bit slow. But perhaps that's just a consequence of introducing all the characters.

I enjoyed episode 2 more than the 1st. Though I still have qualms with the sex scene(s) with Dany and Khal Drogo, i can understand why they did what they did. Still, I wished they could have left the more sweet, endearing first love-making sesh they had, not the rape-ish one they replaced it with. But at least they mostly made up for it with episode 2.

I have more qualms with the sex scene with Dany and the handmaiden. WTF was that all about?

Bran's direwolf becomes more important in the third book, and it is very likely that Arya will be reunited with her direwolf in one of the future books. Both will likely be important to the overall story in the future.

Where were Ned & daughters and royal family when the episode ended? They seemed to be in some city but I didn't have the slightest clue where.

Oh... Inn @ Crossroads. Thank you HBOGO extra features map.

They are in a village somewhere on the Kingsroad between Winterfell and King's Landing. There may be more specific info than that, but I don't recall from memory.

robbs wolf
is really instrumental in some of his battles as well. i think bran as a warg/as his wolf is going to be a major part of the story.

Doreah was given to Dany as a wedding present from Viserys (though I think Illyrio paid). Her specific task was to make Dany a better lover, probably to make sure the Khal was satisfied with the deal. so its from the books, but not really story-critical, HBO just used it to give a dose of T&A. IMO that time would have been better spent showing WHY dany is warming up to Drogo, or showing Viserys unleashing the dragon, or even more exposition on Jorah Mormont.
