"Game of the year edition"

So I've run across a list of games which have multiple versions. One is "game of the year edition." I'm wonder, other than the price, what are the differences between these games? Is the gameplay different? Is there more to do, aka the game is longer, more features? Just wondering..Thanks!

It's different depending on the game, but a good rule of thumb is that GotY editions usually have all of the current DLC.

Every game is different. Google it.

Usually, the GOTY edition will include some DLC for free. The Fallout 3 GOTY edition includes all five DLC packs, which would cost $50 if purchased individually.

But it varies based on the game.

The reason i ask is bc. Elder Scrolls: Oblivion is $15.00 on amazon, but the game of the year edition is like $35.00...is it worth it for this game? or is the original good enough?

It depends on the game. Since every game nowadays has a goty edition, you have to be careful.

For the most part, they will include all the dlc with it. In this case, oblivion goty includes the dlc, and it's worth it if you're interested in oblivion. A lot of people give up on oblivion long before they get the dlc, so you just have to gauge your interest on the game to determine which one you want.

There's some games with a goty edition that don't really add anything (looking at you COD40

The GOTY adds the expansion which is supposed to be pretty good. What I'd do is buy the normal editon and try finding a friend or someone on the forums who has the GOTY disc, it just installs to your HDD.

FWIW, the Oblivion GOTY edition includes two expansions: Shivering Isles and Knights of the Nine. I can't comment on the quality of the content since I never got that far, but my understanding is that both expansions are significant in size.

Actually, it would be KotN, Kabob. 😛

Knight of the Nine is more like a long quest than an expansion. Decent set of armor, too. Shivering Isles is an actual expansion and will take a while to do everything in it.

COD4 GOTY edition comes with the single DLC pack for free. Sure it's only a $10 value but it's something to consider.

Oh, except that the code used for the map pack is one time use only. So if you buy COD4 GOTY used, chances are you won't get anything extra.

That was a limited time promotion. If you bought COD4GOTY now it would not have that map pack.

Nope, it doesn't. Only the first run, AFAIK, did, and after that it was a GOTY edition by name only.

I got suckered in to buying the goty edition because I though the dlc was included, only to pay $10 extra anyway. Screw you activision.

Wow, I didn't even know that. When I bought it, it said on the package that it included the map pack, and it did. Can't remember for sure now but that must have been a sticker they put on the first run.

Oh well, it's just typical Activision gouging.

Doesn't it have to win GotY to be called GotY edition? Just wondering. I don't remember multiple titles having this back in the day.

just about any site or magazine can name a goty. So if you got one place to call it goty, then you can release a goty edition. 🙄
