Any idea whats going on here?

I was playing Sid Meiers Railroads, and one day the game exited and decided it didnt want to switch back to my default desktop resolution of 1600x1200. Ive had it happen rarely in the past with other stuff, and i just changed the rez back manually. Everything seemed fine untill i tried to load up Railroads, again... i started getting video errors. I assumed it was a bug with the game at first, but no one else was reporting it. Then i started getting it with other games, the latest being Star Wars: Empire at War. This time the errors go like this:

"Generic application error. Enable debug output for detailed information.
Switching to the reference rasterizer, a software device that implements the entire Direct3D feature set, but runs very slowly."

Then i get this:
"Warning: Nothing will be rendered. The reference rendering device was selected, but your computer only has a reduced-functionality reference device installed. Install the DirectX SDK to get the full reference device."

And finally:
"Could not reset the Direct3D device.
This application will now exit."

What's going on? Everything was working fine untill that first game dumped me out. The one game ive been able to get working was Warhammer 40k: Dawn of War, but that was only working in windowed mode. If i tried to use it in fullscreen mode, id get another slew of errors and it wouldnt start.

Im using an AMD FX51 with a Radeon 9800XT. Ive installed the latest ATI drivers (and run driver cleaner before installing) and tried reinstalling the games, nothing works.

Help, please?!

Maybe reinstall directx?

Check your device manager to make sure there are no !'s...

Check your display properties and make sure your adapter is selected not some generic windows one, and your monitor is selected not some default one...

Forgot to mention i already reinstalled DirectX. No conflicts or anything out of the ordinary in the device manager. Display properties are all setup correctly. :/

I tried messing with it again tonight... still nothing... is reinstalling windows the only option left to me?

Does anyone know what those errors are referring to? Maybe they could translate them into something that makes sense to me? heh

I'd said driver issues not releasing the display res correctly, try different drivers, cant see how new drivers on your old card would benefit anyway.

Uninstall / reinstall the game? Do this before resorting to reinstalling Windows.

from the DOS prompt, type 'chkdsk /r' and answer Y when it asks if you want to schedule a chkdsk at the next reboot - then reboot and let it run. This should fix any broken files that might have been created when the game quit.

Driver Cleaner, then re-install the drivers. Uninstall the game, re-install. Only then with the full windows re-install.

Ive tried reinstalling it. Doesn't work. :(

It's really bizarre, DXDIAG shows me failing all the Direct3D tests. It says "an error occurred while setting your display to 640x480 mode with 16-bit color." Similar errors for the other two tests it runs. This is with a Radeon 9800XT using the latest ATI drivers and a fresh install of DirectX. WTF?! :(
