Game/HTPC on a budget

1. What YOUR PC will be used for: This will be in our family room and hooked up to a 58 inch plasma TV. I would love to get a video card that has the HDMI interface, but that may be asking for too much

2. What YOUR budget is: $400-$550

3. What country YOU will be buying YOUR parts from: USA

4. IF YOU have a brand preference: I haven't been keeping up enough these days to be a fan of anything. I always loved Abit, but don't really care

5. If YOU intend on using any of YOUR current parts, and if so, what those parts are: I have a brand new Ultra case still sitting in the box. I don't know if it comes with a PSU, but I would probably scrap the PSU anyway.

6. IF YOU have searched and/or read similar threads: No

7. IF YOU plan on overclocking or run the system at default speeds: Default speeds

8. WHEN do you plan to build it? April 2009

9: Other considerations: The build can be obsolete. In other words, I don't need a cutting edge processor. I currently have a pc with a socket 478 2.4 Ghz processor and a 6600GT video card. I can still play a lot of games, but the games are starting to require specs that I don't have (3.0 Ghz processor and 6800GT or better). As long as I can get something that will play the latest games for the next 2 years, I will be happy. Also, I don't need to be able to play games at the highest quality. Medium video quality would be nice to have. I also want to eventually add a blueray player. A motherboard would firewire would be nice, but not absolutely necessary.

Is this completely out of the question on my budget?

**Edit** I stumbled across this place on a separate unrelated matter. They do pickup and they are 6 miles down the road from me. Perhaps there is a kit you could recommend from what they have there as opposed to Newegg if it will help in terms of cost savings

While not absoutely necessary, having an extra core or two while doing blu-ray watching is quite nice. Generally makes it smoother (I was running off of 5050e and tried a Kuma also, they still stuttered a bit even with GPU offloading)

Also note it is possible to make that AMD Phenom II X3 710 into a quad core using the Biostar motherboard. For more infomation, check out the CPU/Overclocking part of the forum.

Consider a basic PC from the dell outlet (be sure it has a PCI-Express slot) and a radeon 4850 or 4870. Both have dropped way down in price.

The funny thing is, prices are so good nowadays that the system zerogear proposed wouldn't just run games for 2 years, it will probably do it guns blazing!

The OP will be happy with medium quality, but he'll be quite happy to realize he can crank almost everything in any game, within his budget. :D

Wow, I hate to be a pain in the neck, but is there any way, we could tone it down. I didn't realize that I could get that much for $500. Can we change the budget to $300? I know I gave a different budget earlier, but it was based on my expectations. The truth is that I want to spend as little as possible. Sorry and thanks for the response zerogear.

Scrap the video card and the firewire port and just buy that. Overclock the 790gx a bit and you'll get 6800GT+ performance.

Maybe look at Anandtech's latest buyers guide at their Entry-level PCs and for games add the 3850 for $54.99 that's in Neweggs latest email deals.
