Game Demos on PS3 Stutter a lot

Hey guys I have the 60GB PS3 and I've noticed that almost all the game demos I download exhibit stuttering in some fashion. Do you guys also notice this? I was playing the Skate demo today and after a while the stuttering got really bad making the game almost unplayable.

Never noticed anything like that. I haven't tried Skate demo on PS3 though, this is out of Resistance, Motorstorm, Heavenly Sword, Ninja Gaiden, and uuuh the Gran Turismo demo.

That is not normal. Do you have an actual PS3 game (hard disc)? Does this happen with those games?

Maybe a bad hard drive? Might want to call Sony and get it replaced.

Well the Heavenly Sword demo definitely has slight stuttering here and there. That's what it is really, just slight stuttering every now and then. Kind of annoying. Retail games don't exhibit this problem though.

I've never seen any problems like this, although I've not downloaded the skate demo. However heavenly sword had no stuttering ... other than the crappy tearing and framerate in that game.

Try the Armored Core demo, it was stutter-free for me.

If it stutters, you might have won the "defective hard drive lottery" which is quite lucky for a PS3 owner.

well some of these games do indeed have graphical performance issues on the demos. The Heavenly Sword demo is a vastly unpolished version, as the same level in the retail game plays much smoother. Skate is just a game that suffers from framerate issues at different times due to poor coding on the behalf of EA. Other games, however, I cannot explain for.

I don't see how this could be a harddrive problem. To me it seems like thrashing (i.e. not enough RAM causing pagefaults to the HDD). I think you guys might not be as critical as I am because I've now seen stuttering on the same demos on my friends 60GB PS3. Go download the Stranglehold and Heavenly Sword Demos and tell me you see absolutely no stuttering whatsoever.

what do you mean by stuttering?

do you mean framerate drops or do you mean the game literally pauses for a moment and won't accept input or anything?

read my above post.
the demos on the PSN store tend to be of lesser quality than retail, presumably they all use pre-final code.

most of the stuttering is NOT the PS3's problem, it is inherently bad development. The system can easily handle engines of the same caliber of Unreal Engine 3.0, it just has to be coded properly. A lot of these games don't hold a candle to the amount of detail that will be present in UT3 on the PS3, yet run worse. Why? Unoptimized code is the culprit. Soon, the games should start having less of these problems and also looking a lot better.

I have downloaded and played the Skate demo for more than 3 hours and have never noticed any skipping, frame dropping or stuttering.

I am plugged in via HDMI to a receiver and then to my 1080p plasma.

Sounds like a HD issue to me.

You've never noticed any framerate drops in Skate? I find that VERY hard to believe, unless you have no idea what to look for.

So you're saying "stuttering" = momentary drop in framerate? If so, then your PS3 is just fine, and there is nothing to worry about.

Not framerate drop. Stuttering as in HDD stuttering.

Hard drives don't "stutter".

noone here seems to be able to figure out exactly what you are trying to describe, so youll have to explain it in detail.

are you trying to say that the audio cuts in and out rapidly? what about the video, and how long does it last? if it happens in every demo and is constant then you probably have a defective ps3.

Harddrive thrashing when there is not enough system RAM is what I'm seeing during these game demos.

i doubt thats whats actually happening, every PS3 has the same amount of available ram and the games are developed specifically with that in mind. they probably dont even use page files?

what are the symptoms?

Maybe a bad RAM module or chip, causing the HDD to go nuts. Call Sony like the others said, I'm sure something is up.

Based on this I gather that your PS3 is not defective, you are just very, very sensitive to low framerates.

You should stay away from all of the consoles and just play on a high-end PC system.

I've never had that problem, even with the Skate demo. Call Sony about it.

i guarantee the skate demo has framerate drops, as the retail product does too. seeing as how every PS3 is the same, yours would see the same effect... however, just like some people can play video games at 30fps and say they are velvetty smooth, others will say it is definitely a little choppier. Now, 30fps to me looks smooth enough, for me however, it's apparent as soon as it dips a little bit below that. Everyone has different sensitivities to framerate, as DaveSimmons stated.

Like I said I'm more sensitive to this stuff. Resistance played BEAUTIFULLY, they really coded it well for the PS3. However, it's becoming apparent that most other games have been rushed out with little effort to optimize for PS3 (especially EA games). Skate definitely has framerate drops at times (read the professional reviews), if you can't see it then I don't know what to say. Ignorance is bliss I guess.
