Nintendo is going to go out of buisness... when I got my original gameboy there where already color portable gaming systems like the Atari LYNX and the Sega Gamegear, Gameboy just turned color a few years ago. Now they're just coming out with something DECENT in color... they're behind, they have nothing competing with the Xbox or the PS2 or Dreamcast... what do they have other than this new gameboy?

they have the Gamecube coming out which is innovative in the sense that they don't need to take a loss on each one and it still can graphically compete with ps2 and xbox which are subsidized losses. Sony's upcoming PSX-compatible handheld will be quite good, also will double as a portable cd player

hpkeeper, are you on crack??

the gameboy walked all over all handhelds, its friggin still selling like mad today. its like the best selling system of all time. and it was monochrome, dont you think that is embarrassing for like the gamegear, taht couldnt beat a 2 color system??

hello, gamecube?

please tell me you are being sarcastic. the only competition they will have is xbox, and the winners are all the consumers.

I have one of these GameBoy Advanced in my hands now (yes, an import). Its a pretty nice system (only Mario at the moment, will get US Zelda since I can't read Japanese), but I don't like the triggers at the top -- they are a little uncomfortable.

GBA will definitely own the portable market. This thing is more powerful than a SNES! Its a 32 bit system that can handle all the SNES roms from a long time ago (minus the buttons, yes I know), so there is potential library of games to choose from, plus all the Gameboy games and color Gameboy games. If you like the handhelds, the GBA is for you.

I just wish the GBA launched like the original Gameboy. Headphones, batteries, and Tetris (with a plastic cover). The only real complaint about the GBA games is the lack of a plastic cover for the games. Other than that, its a solid unit.

There is no competition in handhelds. Nintendo owns everybody on games for handhelds except for the GameCube. In fact, the GameBoy Advance is the only system by Nintendo that they actually promote adult games on.

Those are actual polygons on the skater.

I thought the GBA didn't have 3D capabilities?

Two double A's and haven't died yet. Plenty of playing in the first few days, now I play a bit less (frustrating Mario, argh!), but its still alive. Two double AA's over about.. 2 weeks of use, its not bad if you ask me. When Zelda comes out US, I'll give it the complete torture test and see how long they really last.

its always had 3d capabilities...its just not very advanced.

ripped from an ign article about tony hawks 2 development

But what the development team has been able to pull off on the 32-bit handheld is absolutely phenomenal. First of all, the developers have taken the character data from the Dreamcast/PlayStation version and moved it to the Game Boy Advance ? the skaters are modeled in 3D on the handheld using as many as 300 polygons. Compared to the console's modeling, a couple hundred polys isn't much ? but when shrunk down to fit on the screen at a fixed perspective, you'll never be able to notice the lack of detail. And when you see this 300 poly skater move, it'll be then when you realize that you're playing true portable Tony Hawk

We just got out import Advance yesterday.. yes, with Mario.. It is very, very nice.. 50% better battery life than the GBC and 16 bit color and as ARM puts it 'boosting performance by over 50 times and displaying more than 600 times as many on-screen colors as Game Boy Color. It will enable previously impossible scaling, rotating and transparency effects.'

I can actually enjoy playing with this machine. The GBC was just not there for me...

Concerning batt life, my lil sys has an old pocket, and that thing eat's up the AAA's, and she play's maybe an hr a day. though since i disasembled her pokemon red, she hasn't played much, I'm not sure why, lost the screw, so I can't put it back together for her yet.

vash, about the GBA, you say it can handle roms from the snes, how does it do that? ;)

oh vash, you don't have private messaging enabled!!! darn.... well does that gba work with older bung cartridges?

I'm not saying that it handles SNES roms, but the system is a 32 bit system versus the SNES' 16-bit stuff. So, technically, it has a more powerful CPU, I know it has a better video system and it has lots of RAM (doom and street fighter for goodness sake!). So, the roms may be coming (dunno how, but I'm sure someone would figure a way), but at least they can be ported.

Why not just wait a month & a half & buy the US version? IIRC they'll be out in June.

Each of these places have the import. I'm lucky enough to have a mother and father in-law in Japan that loves their daughter (my girl) and sends her cool toys to play with (still workin on getting an import PS2 sometime).
