Standard of living = how much your paycheck is

Quality of life = everything important, including your paycheck and ability to provide for your family.

In the us our stand of living is very high but our quality if life is, in my opinion, very low when compared to the rest of the developed world. Yeah we're better than Greece and Spain but trailing 50 years behind most of the rest.

What good is making this extra money if you have no time off, poor schools, high student loan debt, stagnant wages, expensive and cumbersome healthcare, no maternity leave, no pension plans, no job stability, and pretty much everything caters to the top 5% of the population.

Those who can't grasp that making $50k and getting a ton of time off, a nice retirement, and lots of benefits is far better than making $70k but getting no benefits baffle me. You must all be making $250,000 a year.

I'd say it might be more the "Consume, consume, consume!" philosophy that's to blame. The average American has more cars, bigger homes, and more stuff than the average European, but it's still not enough. Everyone in the US, right and left alike, believes that if everyone else would just vote for the correct politicians that we would all be rich.

You can't really buy time, maternity leave, or most of the stuff that gives these other country's citizens a better life. When you can live your life without being fired on a moments notice it makes a big difference. When you don't have to fear bankruptcy due to getting sick, when you get a bunch of paid national holidays, when you can retire with dignity...

Too many people only think of themselves so as long as they get theirs they don't give a shit that the other 200 million working Americans are living a life sub standard to like half a billion people in other developed nations.

Sweden once ran a chunk of the USSR, I didn't specify their overseas colonies. The Danish empire gives them claims to things (like Arctic resources) into the modern age. Each was a significant part of the history of each nation. Heck still is, hello Greenland.

You act like I can't search Wikipedia. All those other nations you mention rode the imperialist world to the end and paid a price for that in destructive wars and the costly aid that was required by a modern sensibilities. That was my point- Switzerland, Belgium, Denmark and Sweden are the Mark Cuban's of the European world. They got in and out when it was good to do so, just like Mark sold before the dot com bust.

Therefore Denmark, like Mark, is an exception and not a rule.

Just like America would be an exception in the same discussion. Unlike the rest we are the ones that have to spend the money needed on the military force the world needs to run smoothly. Every modern European power has skirted that responsibility so much recently all of their social programs basically have an American subsidy by default. I hope Putin forces them to chip in more soon, France and Britain splitting an air craft carrier is embarrassing.

Sweden was last a colonial power in the 1700s. I'm pretty sure they folded against the Baltic bordering states before our revolutionary war.

They just believe that they will be making the big money- some way, somehow, someday. And they'll believe it right up to the day they die in the saddle or are forced into retirement.

It's completely unrealistic, but that true for a lot of what Righties believe. The top 5% of earners are only 5% of the workforce no matter how we look at it.

I left the US years ago. Life is peaches. Better yet the dollar is finally really strong so I can move it out if the country and live like a king.

Odd that you say "our" in your posts as if speaking of living in the US. But good for you, and good luck in your future non-US endeavours.

Still my country and I do care about its future. I have friends and family there.

It's messed up when I know people who see what I did but can't leave since they're saddled in medical debt or can't leave because they never learned a foreign language or don't have a desirable job overseas. Learn those languages and don't get a fluff degree. Now with that said you can get residency visas in some countries by investing in them and depending on what business you're in can live really well.

Don't just sit there and suffer though. Leave your city, state, or country if that's what it takes. Can't do it broke though in most cases and the problem is that many Americans live paycheck to paycheck.

The american dream costs so much today that only around 15% of the country can get there. Keep telling yourselves that if you just work harder you'll get there though.
