They are still harmless. When I start to notice people getting killed in the name of Scientology, they will maybe start to matter.

be careful what you ask for:

What does Scientology expect when it has Tom Cruise and John Travolta as its spokesmen.

They are a joke and nothing more. Wasting time on celebrity gossip is just that... a waste of time.

Are you a scientologist?

I have been following scientology for a while now and let me tell you something, it is scary. The public face of scientology is way way different than behind the scened.

Apparently you missed my "Imaginary Friends" rant a few posts above.

You've been following the celebrity gossip. You just got wrapped into it. It is okay. Scientology isn't trying to take over the world. There will still be antidepressants candy machines.
Scientology is a good "story" for the media and for kiddies on the internet. It is like that Project Chan. Little kids see a pretty easy target that seems to be powerful. They know that public sentiment is pretty suspicious against said target. They feel in powered with their little protests. Everyone else knows it is a joke. But have your moments. Enjoy your celebrity gossip.

I didn't miss it, Steve. I have been on these forums for a while now. ATOT opened my eyes up to a lot of the world, sadly by the time P&N came about, I took a hiatus, kinda like a vacation. I read up on some new things, and since about 2003, thanks to a post in ATOT back then have been following the Church and its ways.

This is not a joke Steve. I wish it were a joke. Look at your gossip sites and kiddie sites, open your eyes a little. At first when I started reading Operation Clambake I thought it was a Soap Opera with all this crap. Slowly, all of it turned into a sick Soap Opera.

Fanaticism in any form over any idea usually ends up being a bad thing. I've glanced at these sites before. ( watched the videos. I giggled at south park and the Tom Cruise video. They are all the same. Unsubstantiated claims and generally paranoia all over a bunch of people who believe some silly things.

I've heard it all. All about their silly alien theories, about L. Ron having a steady supply of young boys to rape on his secret island, how they carefully horde and hide their secret ideas and goals, how they somehow have a stranglehold on our government and about people mysteriously disappearing or being raped or given the willies.

People lie. People sensationalize stories. People are paranoid.

Frankly I don't care. I don't believe the hype. There are much bigger problems to care about.

They will never do more damage than the Bush Administration or whatever Evil Council of Hate and Big Business really runs the country.

The thing about Scientology is that they have such funny sounding ideas that making fun of them is almost without effort. They are like Mormons in that way. Mormon's get all sorts of crazy paranoia and propaganda against them too. They get it a little less because their ideas are a bit less silly and are based on something the average Joe can relate to (Basic Christianity). The Jokes slowly become suspicion and suspicion turns to fear, and fear becomes rampant paranoia.

That is where we are now. It is why the news media runs exposes and any little thing as breaking news. It is why teenagers with internet power ruined /b/ and wear masks outside of Churches with silly signs spouting memes.

Give the crazies a break. It is a fundamental American right to believe whatever nonsense you want to believe. You are making them victims.

I love the fact that people have the right to believe in whatever they want, that is what makes our country so great. I have no problem with Scientology, only the Church abuses its parishioners and takes them for fools.

There are bigger and badder evils going on in the world, I give you that. But at the moment this is the one that is interesting me, :p.

The church likes to play dirty and has silenced its critics way too much, trouncing on their first amendment rights. Dont you think that your first amendment is important?

not a surprise to see atheists at the bottom.

Not a surprise, but it's still very very sad. It's been a couple thousand years since civilization began and most people still adhere to primitive, caveman philosophies.

Religion is an advent of society to control the masses. It does not pre-date society, it has been part of our society and has only started its decline in the past hundred years.

110% agree. While I think there is a divine power, I am almost certain orgainized religions were invented to control man's thoughts and actions.

That's the point. It's freedom from religion.

Well, that's only a point form an Atheist's view....

My view from a religious view and the reason why religious people don't like the coin term "Atheist" well, this is my view... That can't corrupt the younger generation. And with out NEW members joining giving 10%... Then what good is that for a church? No Money, No Fun...so to speak.

It's all about the greed and $$$.... Put away your bible it's just a big scam... Hey, don't believe me? Give a bit more and I'll keep the gates open for you a little longer. Donate your property and home? Shit, we'll give you a golden ticket ... front of the line pass to heaven!

Hahaha!

Sigh...

I would say that about 75% of the American population has and continues to say that they are nutballs. I don't see anyone silenced by any means other than their rebuttals.

If you are dumb enough to dump your money into any organization with no guarantee of any service or return then it is your own fault. I have no sympathy for the people who waste their money on any vice, be it gambling, alcohol, drugs, or religion.

I waste my money how I like; they can do the same. To me it is just placing a bet on which door you take when you die.

There will always be religion. It may not be centered around a "god". I personally think ideologies will replace traditional religion over the next 1000 years. They are as powerful as religion but dont require a belief in a spiritual being. Just a belief in the ideology and the leaders who profess the faith.
I think the only thing that will lead to significant abandonment of a belief in God would be the combination of (1) advances in medicine such that all diseases are curable, all physical and mental problems/limitations are correctable, aging is halted (and reversible), and death is conquered, (2) criminality is eliminated or at least greatly reduced, and (3) conflict between societies is effectively eliminated.

Absent any of those things, significant human suffering would still occur. And in the face of suffering, most people need as a coping mechanism a sense of cosmic order, purpose, and justice = God.

You may be correct. However we saw tremendous suffering and hardships in the early 20th century and the result was a rise of ideologies. Fascists in Italy, Communists in the Soviet Union, China, and Eastern Europe. National Socialists in Germany. The traditional churches are seeing a dropoff in attendance in the west. I dont think it is that far fetched to believe a large % of our population will replace traditional religions with ideologies. But the same basic requirement of the human brain to seek a higher power is still there.
