At $399, the WiFi Samsung Galaxy Tab certainly sounds like a decent deal, but since it’s still running on Android 2.2 and a slower Hummingbird processor, most hardcore Android fans will probably opt to pay a little more for the WiFi version of the Motorola XOOM that’s expected to hit store shelves within the next few weeks. While we all want the newest product with the latest version of Android, is the WiFi Galaxy Tab still appealing if is costs $200 less than the WiFi XOOM?

What do you make? I like the size of the Galaxy Tab better than the Xoom personally. And its 1024x600 screen does allow for far better browsing than the 480x800 resolution screens that are so common on the Chinese tablets. 400 seems a tad steep though.

Its also 199 on contract at Verizon Wireless. Would cost more in the long run though.

Well, against first-gen iPad, which is arguably still very usable, and now at $399 brand new or $349 refurbished, I think this will be a tough sale.

If anything, it still looks like the iPad is cheaper.

I really want a Tab. I prefer the size over bigger tablets like the iPad and Xoom. I also like the hardware video acceleration. That said I cant see myself paying over $300 for one.

So I'm forced to wait for the Playbook and the 8 inch Tab2.

Is it going to get software upgrades? Samsung has a pretty terribly track record in regards to releasing newer versions of Android compared to other manufacturers.

Shrug, I wouldn't expect a 2.3 or 3.0 update until well after the next revision of Android is released. Samsung usually lags behind at lot. Lazy schmucks. And people keep buying their stuff too.

If you buy this, you buy it expecting zero official update. Just think of it as Color Kindle or Nook but with lot more power and features. Except it supports pretty much everyhing out of the box and you dont have to hack it to death to get features working 80% of the time. It is the best multimedia tablet currently in the market. Better than even Xoom and iPad2. This even with last year tech.

It always had a Wifi model, no?

I think with the other tablets on the market now, Samsung need to release a new model, or at least an updated one. The Galaxy Tab was the first true competitor to the iPad (not the Xoom), and I've heard good things about it. But there is more competition now than there was when it was released last year.

I'm waiting for my Nook Color still. Can CM7 play youtube videos ok? How about playing MKV files like my Samsung Captivate can?

From what I know from mine, from nightly build 22 on, you tube works. I don't know what MKV files are....
