Good news: the US hardware *can* make phone calls. People got it working on T-Mobile, although of course T-Mo's nonstandard 3G bands meant it made the device 2G only.

Bad news: T-Mo is shutting down internet on Tabs hacked for phone use. Why on earth would they go to this trouble? It costs the same as a smartphone, usage is going to be the same as a smartphone, so why not let it sit on a regular smartphone plan?

Not sure if there are compatible CDMA modems to make the Verizon and Sprint ones work, but AT&T's Tab should work when it releases -- with compatible 3G bands too. If they don't try T-Mo's lockdown BS, anyway.

Speaking of going through too much trouble, why would you bother using a tablet as a phone?
Also, my understanding is theres going to be both GSM and CDMA versions of this bad boy.

As for T-mobile, that sounds strange because they are usually pretty cool with you bringing in unlocked hardware and letting you use it like you want.

I dont think you should be buying this for phone use. Treat it like the tablet it is, which means a limited functionality computer you can take anywhere. It fact being smaller than the iPad means its even more handy. And I would also verify if this sucker is getting Gingerbread or not because thats supposed to be more useful for tablets. I never felt like getting a tablet but this one would be it, if I knew it would be receiving all of Androids future updates.

Remember what people looked like holding up the first cell phones from the 1980's to their ear. I see holding this up to your ear looking very similar...size wise, probably about the same :D

Can you spot weld a pull handle onto the back? That way you can hold it to your ear like a phone!

It think it's only good at making phone calls when using it with a bluetooth headset.

Thats fine, but I'm not big on Bluetooth. If the OP is fine with it then more power to him. Still seems strange that Tmobile would be so difficult. They are usually the best about being free (cuz they are on the bottom).

I ended up going with the iPad instead of the Galaxy tablet after a week of deciding and evaluating my needs. I have no bias since i own two apple computers and a HTC Incredible... plus two kids with android phones. (Verizon)

I now use my incredible as a hotspot so i can use my iPad when i'm out of range of WiFi or not at home. The iPad is not a phone or computer, but an addition too them, i can make a call even with a 3.5 earpiece, and use a free texting app that allows attachments. The iPad is not my main source of communication, but in a pinch or for convenience those apps will serve a purpose.

I don't miss FLASH, i've had some web pages where i couldn't watch a video but i really didn't care, and... if really wanted to watch a video, i'd wait till i was on my home computer.

The user experience with the iPad is phenomenal, and if you're a gaming person which i'm not, you'd love it. The apps written for the iPad are done very well with a high standard.

My opinion is base on my needs and my experience. JMO

Checked out the Galaxy last night and I have to say it is just a little smaller than I'd want. The iTab is a little bigger than I'd want so my feeling is that a tablet with an 8.5 inch screen is, for me, just about the perfect size. I'd want a smaller bezzel so that the physical dimensions would be about 8.5 x 5.5 x .625. And lets have a 1920 x 1200 screen thank you very much...
