Unlocked, out of contract.

Where have you been the past couple years? That's a fairly standard price for any new smartphone.

Actually international versions go for 700 or more. I see these selling used for 500 to 550 on xda developers.

Oh you pay for it, you just don't see it, where do you think do the carriers make up the difference between a full priced and discounted phones.

You can get cheaper data plans or sign up for prepaid and pay half price of what you pay for regular att contract service.

maybe on paygo, but not regular at&t

I pay $180 for a 4 line family plan with at&t and get subsidized phones every year. same would cost me $200 minimum on gophone and much higher phone prices

xda dev forums people have had success with using the non-smartphone $15 unlimited data plan with the SGS2. really thinking about giving ATT the finger and just picking up this device. at $500, its pretty cheap and can make your money back much faster than at $600. also, use your upgrade towards an iphone 5 and sell it to the apple sheep on ebay and profit off of that too!

I'm in a family plan with ATT and pay $65 for my iPhone4. Haven't explored prepaid, but $65 aint bad.

im actually considering this, and then just using my upgrade to buy and sell the newest iphone.

Which phone will have better support within the modding community?

What are the advantages/disadvantages to having this phone over the att version? (not referring to cost, just features, performance, etc)

This phone would go great with ATT new prepiad $25 plan.
250 mins and unlimited text.
Use google voice when you have wifi so 250 mins is plenty.
Problem is prepaid data is expensive.
$15- 100mb $25- 500mb.
Wish they offer they prepaid ipad/tablet data plan.
$15- 250mb $25- 2gb

Well, the biggest issue with the Galaxy S phones was the US carriers supporting the phones. Samsung released numerous updates, the carriers here just sat on them.

I did the math on the official ATT release versus importing assuming you use Google Voice for texts:

Subsidized:
$200 phone + $40/mo for 450 minutes + $15 data for 200MB = $1520 after two years
$200 phone + $40/mo for 450 minutes + $25/mo data for 2GB = $1760 after two years

Imported:
$500 phone + $40/mo for 450 minutes + $15 unlimited data plan = $1820 after two years

EDIT: Apparently there is an unlimited $50 pre-paid GoPhone plan that you can use, so it changes it a bit http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=15656017&postcount=30 :
$500 phone + $50/mo unlimited voice/text/data = $1700 after two years

So it's not as cut and dry, especially if you use under 2gb (unlimited it probably is). The imported version does not have any sort of warranty as well.

But you could get an iPhone 5 subsidized, sell that, and buy your imported SGSii instead and probably come out on top (new iPhone5 will probably sell for more than $500).

This international phone will have the best support from the modding community. Look at what happened with SGS1. You buy the US version cause it's subsidized, not because better support. US version you have to deal with US carriers for update. Enough said. The only thing good about the US version is the warranty support.

not only that but on the regular AT&T plan if you do unlimited family texting you also get unlimited mobile to mobile minutes. without that any minutes to AT&T customers are free but other networks aren't

with virgin you use minutes no matter who you call. is it the same on go phone?

iphone4 right now is going for up to $500 on ebay. i imagine the iphone5 would demand even more $ when its brand new. i'm still on the fence as well. if i do get the international version i'd just probably pay the extra $80 and get it either on newegg or amazon. i' have no experience with this website.

i think i convinced myself to purchase the international SGS2 tonight from newegg or amazon. even if i do get caught and they add the smartphone data plan to my account, which seems very unlikely according to most online accounts, i can still break even at worst if i use my upgrade to get an subsidized iphone5 and resell.

i'd lose NFC, since the international version doesn't have NFC, but dont really care for that feature anyways since most plces in the us dont even support it.
