Galaxy S to surpass iphone soon?

While brushing my teeth this morning I overheard on the news (Fox5) that Samsungs GS phones are close to surpassing the iphone in number of sales. Has anyone heard this? With all the woes of the GS phones (GPS, lack of updates, etc) I am surprised that it sold that many # of phones. I also assume its worldwide sales so its not that big of a deal.

According to analysts, Samsung is expected to announce for Q2 that it sold anywhere from 18 to 21 million smartphones (Nokia 16.7 million, Apple 20.3 million) which is pretty remarkable seeing as they haven’t even released a U.S. version yet (our review). Once the Galaxy S II hits our shores, you can almost guarantee that these numbers will spike again as one of the most anticipated devices of the year.

Same here. Other than myself I only know of 3 other people who have a GS variant. Everyone else I know has either an iphone or other android device.

I have a Vibrant and know 2 others with Vibrants. 4 other people have Android phones of one type or another and only one person I know has an iPhone and he's the least computer savvy person in the bunch.

A correction needs to be in order. This is total Samsung smartphones unless I'm reading the article wrong (and I looked at both the article you linked and the Bloomberg article) and not Samsung Galaxy S phones.

From Samsung's own website, the Infuse, Vibrant, Nexus S, Droid Charge, Sidekick, Captivate, Replenish, and Focus (Windows smartphone). I'm excluding the Galaxy line of smartphones which are listed as the Galaxy Indulge, Prevail, and Galaxy S. Clicking on the links, there are 3 Windows based smartphones and 27 Android based smartphones. Each of those sales would be counted as a Samsung smartphone. Notably there are 3 smartphones that are not even Android based, although I doubt they bring in significant sales at this point. More to the point, there are a lot of different models of Android smartphones.

I have no doubt the Galaxy line of phones makes up a large part of their smartphone sales. It should also be said that Samsung's sales are impressive and makes it an industry leader in terms of sales and overall position. But to say the Galaxy S is going to surpass the iPhone soon is unsubstantiated. Considering how many different models of smartphones Samsung has, it would argue against the claim that the Galaxy series of phones are going to surpass the iPhone line any time soon.

so if 10 million was reached in January and the SGS2 has been available since May, how many more devices do you think they sold?

Even if you take January to be the midpoint in life of the SGS1, though I'm sure most devices sell front heavy in terms of their lifespan, and with increased holiday sales, I highly doubt they're at 20 million even today.

Apple moved 20 million iPhones according its most recent quarterly earnings call. Uh yeah. Surpassed my ass.

And SGS2s sold 3 million in 55 days.

You do realize that the Vibrant and Captivate are both Galaxy S models right? The Nexus S is basically a Galaxy S running stock Android as well.

Perhaps in some countries, but I imagine that Samsung does quite well in Korea, which most likely adds a sizable amount to their sales numbers.

I see the galaxy S the most often out of android phones. The HTC Evo comes in a close second. I am sure they have sold a ton of galaxy phones. It looks like they might be coming close, but that is when you count every single smartphone they sold. Is there any data where we can get a breakout of just galaxy S phones?

This thread just talk about iPhones(no particular one).
If you want to just talk about just Iphones, apple made a statement that they sold over 100 millions iPhones since the inception on March 12, 2011.
Add up all the Galaxy S(1+2 and all the variants) and it not even remotely close.
Samsung just annouced that they sold 3 millions GS2 in 55 days.
Apple sold 3 millions iPhone 4 in 3 weeks.

Actually, no I did not because that was not mentioned in the name. I don't keep up with the individual Android models because there's too many of them. And while the Nexus S is essentially a Galaxy phone (design and hardware), it's likely accounted differently because the Nexus is a direct collaboration with Google.

Either way, it doesn't change my point that Samsung has a lot of phones and that at best, 1/4 of them are in the actual Galaxy lineup and more importantly, the articles linked don't have an actual breakdown of what smartphones Samsung sold and other sources for numbers puts the Galaxy lineup as selling less than half of what the iPhone does. The reason I'm pointing that out is that a lot of Android folks seem to be sticklers for fact and having everything accounted for, now a comment is thrown out that is based on fluff.
