Been reading rave reviews on websites. Curious as to what users have to say.

Surprised no replies. Guess not a popular game on here.

I played the first one. I'd take Civilization IV over it any day! :D

My brother has been on me to buy it, but I don't have the time to play another epic strategy game. Its supposed to be a very good game, and Stardock has been doing some great things with distribution. The developed and published the game themselves, as well as sold it directly only via their website, with no DRM crap. Probably a good thing to support them.

Actually, I picked mine up at a B&M store. I haven't picked up the expansion yet though, I am still irked at how messed up the last patch for the main game was. :|

I'm planning on buying it, it looks to have quite a robust amount of stuff in it for an expansion. I haven't gotten it yet because I aready have a stack of unplayed games on my desk. (Too many games, too little time!).

Did you play Gal Civ II already? I'm guessing how you like the Dark Avatar expansion will depend on that. If you haven't already played the original Gal Civ II, then you might want to ask about that (or search the forums here, since there's been threads on it already).

I have the game, but don't have the expansion pack. I liked it. Do you like turn based conquer the galaxy type games? If yes, this is the best one currently available. I don't know what I can say that's not already in the reviews you've read, but if you have any specific questions post them.

One nice thing is that they continue to support the product. Improvements and customer suggestions are constantly being made for the game. The game can be made to run fairly well on low end systems, but will upscale to much higher resolutions. I think I remember hearing that there is no limit how high it can go. That beats crappy companies like EA who won't even support widescreen.

I also like how they do business. They seem to have more respect for the customer than any other software company out there. No DRM.

Ahh yes...I know how you feel...

Playing Civilization IV and Galactic Civilization II takes a lot of time to enjoy! :D

Or not...

I grabbed GalCiv II and the Expansion at the same time, it was only $40 for both.
I've never played "vanilla" GalCiv 2, but i do love it with Dark Avatar installed; there are still so many things about the game that i'm just working on wrapping my head around; but it's probably right below Civ IV in this genre of gaming for me. I greatly prefer the way it does combat over Civ IV, but i dislike how it does Tech Trees in comparison. But the overall feel is vastly different considering how limited you are in the placement of planets and space stations.

I've only played a little, and i feel that it was well worth what I paid, i know in the future i'll probably sink hundreds of hours into it.... whenever i have time.

I got the gold edition for $28 at Circuit City a few weeks ago, and it reminded me a lot of Alpha Centauri - especially with its sense of humor. Overall, I like it a lot, but I just wish the AI wasn't (by default) always so eager to go to war for no real reason.

Yeah, some civilization will offer be a level one technology in trade for a technology that is fifteen or twenty levels above it and then they get miffed when I tell them to ah heck off. :(
