Having recently quit the MMO thing, I am looking to play a new game. i played the original sid meir's civ as well as the original gal-civ on os/2 and liked them both quite a bit (but havent played any of the successors). does anyone have a recommemdation on what is better?

some criteria to expand on:

which has more micro-management
which has better eye-candy
which has a faster/less-tedious end game
which allows for all-out-war type of playstyle as well as diplomacy or a more defensive playstyle?

thanks.

Hmm, they both have a decent amount of micro-management, but they also both have things to help eliminate the micro management if you want

I'd say civ IV has better eye candy

They both have options for smaller quick games, or for large long drawn out games

Hmm, for all-out-war type, I would probably say galactic civ 2, the diplomacy is fairly decent as well.

I really like both games, they both have their strong points and I enjoy playing both of them.

I have not played gal civ 2, but I think you should try Master of Orion 2... it seems right up your alley (save the eye candy part). Civ 4 is a good game as well, even if the latest expansion pack plays a bit like it was rushed out the door.

I play both.

I like Civ 4 better. War is better in Galactic Civ though.. by far. I don't care for Civilization's war setup much at all.

I like Gal Civ 2 better. I like being able to make my own ships, and IMO the war part of it is much better. Diplomacy is good too. I like that if you expand too quickly, then you'll easily be destroyed due to your forces being spread thin and being unable to monitor all your territory.

...and? t hat is even better refined in Civ IV: expand too quickly, you'll be behind everybody in $ and in tech

ok so i broke down and bought gal civ 2 gold, with the idea that i can buy a used copy of civ4 in the near future (more people have bought civ4 and will want to sell it whereas it is hard to buy a used copy of galciv, plus the company doesnt really support used copies :) )

moo2 was a great game, but seems outdated. yes yes, it is a classic but still.... if only there was a moo3 :)

I would be interested in a GalCiv3, if they every make one. I understand there is another GalCiv2 expansion in the works though.

Edit - I'm still waiting for a space based strategy game, in the vein of GalCiv2 or Civilization that features some good terraforming and detailed colonization.

Shortly after Moo3 was released, it was on amazon for like 15 dollars with a 15 dollar rebate (I'm serious). 20 dollars is a rip off. They basicly dug up MoO franchise Pissed on it and reburied it upside down.
