My plan this summer is to put on weight, not fat, but muscle. Approximately 20 lbs in 3+ months. I got some Weight Gainer 2200 from GNC and I will be taking 3 shakes everyday along with increasing my food intake from 3 meals to about 5-6 meals a day. Along with a nice workout everyday for about an hour, what do you guys think of this plan? Any suggestions/comments/etc appreciated.

It's highly doubtful you'll pack on 20lbs of muscle in 3 months. Depending on of course, how much you've worked out before, what plan you're going on, your body type, your weight now, your food/calorie intake on a daily basis, etc. You need to list all the prevelant details before anyone can pass judgement. As it stands, your post screams "I'm a noob who knows nothing about what he's doing!"

Um... working out an hour isn't going to justify THAT much of an intake gain. Try working out 2-3 hours if you're going to more than double your intake (1-2 extra meals plus 3 of those shakes). Remember to change up what you work on each day. Also remember to speak to a trainer locally to test to see how many days your body's muscles require to recover from the workout. Optimize your time this summer. :)

Ah, yes i am a n00b. But, I have been reading up on this and that was the basic points I got from all books/websites - that I should get supplements and eat a few more meals a day along with working out.

I'm 19 years old. I'm around 120 lbs.

Maybe not 20 lbs, but I'm shooting for a decent gain in weight.

The first mistake was buying a weight gainer, especially from GNC. Good weight gainers can be made yourself with quality products and without all the sugar (whey, steel cut oats etc). BTW I really doubt 20lbs in 3 months of pure muscle will be possible for you. Read up at some of the major lifting sites for a while before you start.

BTW Nik, lifting 2-3 hours, even if its only three times a week is going to lead to over training. And what Josh wants to do is bulk, which is fine, I just hope he understands that while you do signifigantly up your calorie intake, those 5-6 meals are not big ones, they are just spread out throughout the day, and should only sonsist of healthy foods (lots of good carbs, lean meats, lots of protein, milk etc).

Josh before you invest in just a weight gainer you want to get the basics, fish oil, whey, a good multivitamin (NOW adam or Animal Pak are good). Creatine will also help your goals, but make sure you do your research before you go ahead and buy stuff, know exactly what you are putting into your body and how it works.

What Raptor said. For weight training and gaining weight, you train hard and you're in and out of the gym in under an hour. An hour is pushing the amount of weight training you'd need. He's not trying to do massive amounts of cardio to lose weight.

Talk to a nutritionist before going through with this. Make sure your body can take the inrease calories, might want to do a gradual increase instead of a shock increase. There are a few different types of weight lifting techniques you can use to "bulk up". What is the purpose BTW. Are you trying out for football or basketball? Otherwise, I would not recommend such a large increase in weight.

Exactly what most of those products from GNC are made out of. It is about portion control

Few guidelines

5-6 meals is real good. However, I don't think you need a weight gainer 3 times a day, only post workout. Most gainers are rich in carbs and you'll end up puttin no fat. Eat lean meats, complex carbs (oatmean, whole wheat), cottage cheese at night, and lots of vegies. Lots of water.

Workout 3-4 times a week. Everyday for a n00b will be disastrous. You need time to recover.

Putting on 20lb of muscle in 3 months is def possible if you are 120lbs and tall...but it's not easy. You'll end up puttin on soooooome fat if you really bulk but not to extent that you'll have man boobs.

20lbs of muscle in 3 months are some ambitous and most likely unatainable goals; especially considering your supplementation and workout plan.

First, weight gainer wont do much but give you 5000+ calories a day. Eating 5-6 meals per day is a smart move. Working out everyday is not a smart idea considering you might overtrain yourself. Work out heavy and hard 3-4 days per week, never working the same muscle within the same week. Add some cardio into your workout regime 5-6 days per week.

GNC will rip you off. Try www.fitnessone.com

Order some CEE, a multi vitamin, and some whey protein. Those are the basics. If you want to know about some trickier but greatly beneficial supplements I take, PM me. Also, try to drink a gallon of water a day.

What exactly does your workout routine consist of? What about caloric intake and macronutrient percentages?

Forget putting on weight. Get a bike, join the pro tour and become the next KOM.

You won't put that amount of weight short of being totally starved for weeks in the first place. Even then it won't be 20lbs of muscle.

You sure as hell won't do it without squats also.

My mate put on 44lbs of FAT over 4months though. That you CAN DO if you tried hard enough :p. He also lost ~ 30lbs of fat in 6months of hard but most importantly good training as well as keeping his diet in check.

Holy crap there is bad info in this thread, DaShen you are way off, and also the person the reccomended for him to go off and buy some CEE right away.

OP get your advice from somewhere else, because while there is a few of us here that can help you, there are a lot that love to proclaim themselves experts and do not know jack ******.

Try PMing Koing, Raging, Spamela, or even me.

I love reading all these threads about gaining weight. One day you'll be 30 and gaining will no longer be part of the plan.

Enjoy being skinny while you can!

Oddly enough, most skinny guys I know who try to gain weight by increasing the number of meals they eat end up actually losing weight due to the increase of metabolism they get by eating additional smaller meals. Also, if you want to gain weight you should focus on starchy carbs mostly, with a moderate amount of protein.
