Gaining Mass. Fat no good?

I have a question for a lot of you health people out there.

I'm 5'10" and about 140lbs. I'm pretty damn skinny. I eat a lot. Whenever we go out, I'm one of the bigger eaters. Of course, I ran high school cross-country and track and it seems my metabolism is too damn high. I eat whatever I want and unless I'm gorging, I never seem to gain a pound. My blood pressure is low and I have a low heart rate *thank you cross-country training* but I'm not sure about my cholestoral. Would all that running have burned off all the junk food I eat?

Anyway, I'm trying hard to gain weight now. I eat 3 meals a day and 3-4 snacks. I down about half a gallon of milk a day and the snacks are all junk food like chips and candy. I think I've gained nothing so far... Of course, I started this fairly recently. What do you guys think? Should I continue on this course of eating tons of food? Since I'm running and working out again, would all that bad stuff be worked off? Or, am I just taking in the calories, burning them, but clogging my arteries with tasty poison?

So far today, I've eaten 4 cup-o-noodles. Half a can of spam. 1 can of whole kernal corn, 1 can of dinty moore beef stew, half a gallon of milk, and I just finished off 1 can of Chef Boyardee and 2 frozen burritos. 2 cheeseburgers, 1 fries, medium shake. Just to let you guys know what I eat like.

Oh, and I can't spend too much money. I'm a poor college student. So, no expensive health food for me. I take multi-vitamins and whenever I go to the School Cafeteria, I have a salad. Any other advice or comments would be appreciated.

EDIT: Forgot about the trip to In-n-Out. 🙂

my advice: be lazy. move as little as possible.

that reminds me of conan o'brien commenting about how thin he was....

"You see, in those days I was six feet four inches tall and I weighed 150 pounds. Recently, I had some structural engineers run those numbers into a computer model and, according to the computer, I collapsed in 1987, killing hundreds in Taiwan. "

I'm having the same problem. I just like to maintain my weight, but if I don't load myself totally with food three times a day, I lose weight. If I want to pickup what I lose, I have to eat additional calories against my will.

omg, i so envy you. 🙁 I eat like that and my fatass just grows and grows and grows. 🙁 Used to be 180 out of high school but im about 225 now after college....not too bad for 6'0 but I wish I had a metabolism like that..I always have to watch what I eat occasionally to get back down.

Tell me about it. I can kinda see how it sucks gaining weight too much just as much as losing too much.

I have been using digital scale and calculator to keep track of my calorie so that I know for sure I'm getting at LEAST 2,500 Cal a day. Trust me.. Looking at nutrition facts and adding, multiplying and writing down is no fun.

Just go running at least 5 miles a day and then do cardiovascular workouts. That averages out to about 2 hours a day for 4 years. Half of that was Cross country. The other half of track was sprint workouts and weight lifting for my long jumping. Ohh.. Those landings killed my back.

Yea, I kinda like my metabolism but its a pain in the ass when everyone thinks they can take you because their arms are thicker. I gots the speed. 🙂

Quick replies considering its 3 in the morning for me.

<< 3AM? haha, 6AM here. 😉 Sitting on my ass eating fig newtons and drinking beer! 😉 >>

Fig newtons... I could go for some of thsoe right now... Beer. I'm underage. 🙁 I prefer wine coolers anyway.

Oh man. I got an english essay due in 1, 2, 3.... 6.... 11 hours. Maybe I should get started.

Woah there buddy... thats part of your problem. Spam needs to be declared a controlled substance. Definitely nothing good in there for the human body.

😉

got same problem but worse, 5'8" and I was 120 from 8 grade till sophmore in college. Now i'm close to 140 and still 5'8". gota get lots of protien food. Mcdonalds: big n'tasty $.99 each. Gota get the fries anywhere you go... make your own milkshakes in a blender. Anything from Wendy's will work. Protien suppliment can help, but not absolutely necessary. Gorge yourself for about 3 days then start working out. Working out helps a lot. Drink lots of whole milk. Add cheese to EVERYTHING. buy anything chocolate by the pound...got Sam's or Costco and grab the 2 pound bags of m&m's and/or hershey's kisses and keep them at your desk.

Sorry if this post is incoherrant, misspelled...whatever I'm in the middle of my second allnighter and ....well you know how this sh!t goes.

What's the advantage of getting high protein as opposed to loading up on carbohydrates? I am now eating two packs of Maruchan ramen noodle, which costs me 10cents a pack and two packs=720Calories. It tastes pretty good and that's big chunk of calorie there.

well calories are good and all, but from what i understand (and i claim to be an anti-expert here) your body needs the proteins to actually build the body mass. Or something like that. It seems to have worked for me at least a little bit, put on about 15 pounds in 2 months after my weight hadn't changed in about 6 1/2 years.

why mess with a good thing? your metabolism will slow slowly but surely, and you'll soon have a roll of fat around your belly if you continue to eat as you are now. if thats your thing have fun i guess. i don't think you can work off cholesterol😛

Well gota start working out as you try to gain weight. You don't want to gain weight as fat, add it as muscle mass. Then again, what do i know?

heh forgot to add the bit about age 😛 older you get the slower your metabolism will get🙂 wee!

its good to eat a lot when u r trying to gain mass...make sure u get good nite sleep and work out
watch out later on if ur metabolism slows down though, cause then, u should lay off the snacks or else u might gain fat...
😉

also, although almost no one believes in this, but lay off milk also..the great milk myth

Kelvrick,

Why don't you try cutting out all the sheit you eat and just eat 3 regular meals. I don't know what plan you are trying to do by drinking half a gallon of milk everyday and eating candybars, etc. But I can tell you that if you make it a habbit, one day it will catch up to you.

Why not try eating large plates of wheat pasta with chicken cut up in it and other large pasta related meals. Those will take longer for you to burn off than a candy bar or burrito.

If you want to gain mass Kelvrick then you need to Weight train properly. Have a schedule and hit the gym 3x a week every week.

Try and fit in 4-5 smaller portioned meals a day.

Do 15 reps and 3 sets of EVERYTHING. This is such a high volume work out that you WILL get big if you work hard and really push yourself. I gained about 3kg in a 6 week period when my coach made me do this to get me bigger.

The type of exercises and the sports you were doing lend themsevles to not bing all that *good* for bulking up and gaining size. Cross country running is great but its not going to get you big. It will tone you up.

I wouldn't go about gaining mass by eating a lot of junk food. I would eat a lot of rice, pasta, bread, potatoes etc, the basics.

I would also give it time. If you don't have a set routine and work out plan then its going tot ake longer to see results.

DO SQUATS. If you do a lot of squats 15x3 sets I CAN BET YOU WILL gain mass QUICKLY. Do this 3x a week every week for 4 weeks. You will have gained weight and you will have bigger and stronger legs. The legs are the easiest to help gain mass. The long term changes will also to help shape the rest of your body up also.

You do work out right? I wold avoid machines if you can. And work out on free weights and don't be scared to ask people to help show you want to do at the gym. If you have friends that train at a gym and *seem* to know what they are doing then get them to help you out. Free weights are the best to gain mass, and I've found machines to be limiting if you have people show you what to do with free weights.

Proteins for growth and repair.

Carbohydrates for energy.

Eat more protein rich foods and you will get bigger in a few months.

Try to eat 2hrs before you go down the gym this will help greatly in your work out. I eat rice/chicken/some sort of sauce that I buy and mix in. This is healthy and gives a lot of energy boost needed. Also make sure you eat after you work out and drink a lot of water during your work out. You need to replace a lot of the lost fluids.

Ah I see. I think I'm getting alot of carbohydrates, but lacking proteins. I eat alot of bread, noodle, sandwiches, rice and some chicken. I'll see if I can make my parents pay for powdered protein stuff from GNC that supposedly gives me 2,500Cal in protein.

Thats where your going wrong. You have a lot of carbohydrates and not enough proteins. The proteins are for growth and repair and if you don't have enough of this when trying to gain mass then you are not going to gain anymore. If you have plenty then you will get bigger faster.

I would try to get Protein in other forms. Meat produce is good.

The bread, noodles, sandwiches, rice and the chicken is good. I'd say eat more beef and chicken and meats! FISH is really good for you. When I was bulking up I had Chicken Chinese style from my parents takeaway almost 7 days a week after my Weight Lifting. And I would also have a portion of mixed vegetables. The meal consisted of lots of plained boiled rice, chicken breasts with beansprouts with some bbq sauce then the mix vegetables as well. It was HARD to eat this much food every day for weeks. I did and I got bigger.

I would avoid the protein things personally. I think the money is FAR better spent on buying a big sack of rice (we have 25kg sacks here but I'm from an asian family so we eat it 7 days a week), and then chicken breasts for a few £ or $ for you then some sauce mix and cook it. NOT hard and very easy to cook and tastes good. All natural and cheaper then those protein shakes.

This is all I have to eat, thats why. I'm about 500 miles from home and do you expect a college student in the dorms *me of all people* to go buy these things and cook myself?! I can cook, but the damn kitchen is downstairs and washing dishes and stuff... I can't afford to get premade stuff so I stick with the cheap, buy in bulk stuff. My doctor told me to replace water with milk, and in a month, I'll see the difference. I think he was partly joking though since he laughed after he said that... 😕

Been up for about 30 hours. Sleep is always the hardest. 🙁

See, that was always my problem. I was never a bulky guy. Skinny even as a kid. 🙁 I run regularly, 5 times a day. I think I read somewhere that 2 things speed up your metab. Running and smoking. Uh oh... I'm a wee underdeveloped on upperbody. I can berely bench a 90lb'er once. Guess that's why I was a runner. 🙁

Protein is easy for me. I'm asian and I eat noodles and rice all day long. I used to anyway. Now I eat whatever is left in my fridge or closet. Usually noodles.

EDIT: Just for laughs. I love it when girls talk about their flab and stuff. I go, really? I take a quick look or a poke poke and then I roll up my sleeves or show them my abs. I love the evil jealous looks on their faces. 😀
