gah, wtf won't my external HDD show in windows.

I bought an external case to hold my 120gb maxtor a few weeks back. i don't think i ever loaded any drivers since it said windows xp has the drivers in the database. it worked fine for my laptop but i just bought a 160GBHD WD harddrive and i forgot what to set the jumper too. well i put it in slave at first and hooked it up to my pc, it picked up but won't show in windows at all. so i put the jumper on master, still showed up when i plugged it in the usb but won't show anywhere else(windows, my computer, etc.)

what's the deal?

You don't state what the external case is, make etc.

Drive should be master, try powering down, disconnecting the usb from the drive, boot the pc and with the external drive powered up plug the usb in. Windows should detect it and set a drive letter. Does it show on on the taskbar icons (Safely Remove Hardware) and or in Disk Management ?

Did you get anything at all when you connected the drive (windows plays a tune when hardware is connected), does the drive sound like its powered up?

yeah, drive is spinning, i get the little sound when you plug it in the usb.

K, :/ is your USB controller showing anything connected to it in device manager, you also mentioned your laptop before, have you tried it on that aswell?

EDIT : Change the View to by connection.

besdie mass storage it has the yellow exclmation mark and this in the properties:

This device cannot start. (Code 10)

Click Troubleshoot to start the troubleshooter for this device

Well at least it detects it, do you still have the old drive to hand that you could swap over again? Also did you format the drive in the pc before putting it in the case? I assume the IDE connector is notched so its in the right way and you connecting it via USB2, apart from that I'm sort of any other suggestions atm 🙁

i did not format it, bought it from BB a few hours ago, righ tout of the box. i will format it tonight when i get home.

if anyone has any suggestions, please post them.

thx

Try Admin Tools, Disk Management and make sure it has a drive letter assigned that is different from any others.
