Good day fellow AnandTech'ers. I'm trying to install Win98SE on to a laptop hard drive before moving it to a Virgin Webplayer. I'm using an old HP Pentium 1 laptop since it has a floppy drive and CD-ROM drive which I can use to install on to the hard drive.
Now here's the strange thing. The laptop BIOS correctly identifies and sees the hard drive, but doesn't see the entire capacity (which is to be expected, the BIOS is for a P166 and it can't address more than 8.1GB or around that)
I was able to use the boot disk and FDISK and partition the laptop hard drive. However, upon reboot... the laptop wouldn't boot from the floppy boot disk. It will attempt to try but would never get passed "Trying to Boot from Floppy"
What's weird is that none of my settings have changed in the BIOS (still have it set to boot from floppy first). Also, if I replace the new laptop drive with the original laptop drive, I can boot with the floppy just fine.
On the one occasion I was able to boot from the floppy with the new drive, it couldn't format or fdisk since it couldn't find a fixed drive. (i think it might have been improperly mounted that time)
Anyways, if anyone has any idea as to why I can't boot from the floppy with the new drive (after fdisk'ing it), please give a reply.
