gah, time for another PSU

I suppose it's time for a new power supply when I can't turn my computer on without unplugging hard drives, and when it is on, it shuts down when a CD drive spins up.

Never did really like the thing.
*hot as hell
*loud
*cable ends were too big to fit in tight spaces. Had to use extensions to fit between my hard drives and the door

Thinking about it. The only redeeming quality was that it was shiny.

Sadly, I believe I'm going to be getting the cheapest replacement I can too. Something about a four year old computer with a market value of about $50 doesn't scream for a high quality PSU.

And no, I don't have a myspace, so deal with it

What kind of rig is it ? If it's a 4 year old rig without any demanding hardware, then a 380w antec earthwatts will probably suffice for 30$ or so.

A64 3400+ clawhammer, 6800GT, 1gb, 5xHD

The case came with a 420W that worked well until it blew up.

I was actually thinking something off of newegg for $15 + $7shipping

RMA it.

It should still be under warranty... Lifetime, right?

They don't have the old X-Connects any more, so ANYTHING you get as a replacement is going to be better.

I cracked it open a long time ago to put better fans in. I actually still have the stock ones, but there was a warranty void sticker.

Keep in mind that these suggestions, although good and adequate for your current build, leave little room for future expansion.

Do you plan on doing any graphics cards upgrades in the next year or so?

The eXtreme Power 650W is a 550W that's rated at 25°C with a -1W/1°C de-rate. At a 40°C operating temperature, you're only getting about 450W out of that thing.

Although this is more power than the Antec suggested above, the Antec is more efficient.

Again, what kind of headroom would OP like?

For repairing an older system, I think the OP already indicated that he's more interested in minimizing the cost, than he is
concerned with finding a PSU that's highly efficent (>80%). Money saved could then be invested in a complete new
system, later on.
