Well...

My 2 IBM 75 GXPs have been in a slow death for a month now. I've got a new HD coming in the mail. I was happy w/ Win2K for some odd 1.7 years which is why I'm not sure if I should put it back on... I want something that will last that long if not longer. Should I install XP when the new HD comes or should I put a fresh 2K install on it. I've got a fast computer... just trying to figure out which will last me the longest.

I like the new GUI w/ XP, I guess the things I don't like can be disabled. Game performance and ability to connect to a domain are the biggest things. Also, does XP play nice with 2K server (I'd assume so)?

Sigh... I wish my FREAKING IBMs didn't have to die when my system has been so stable :( Right now my system is making large scratching noises, anachronox directory is no longer readable, quake1 sometimes crashes on load, desktop takes a good 3 minutes to refresh and the IBM disk utility just gave me a stupid RMA number. I may RMA them... but what good are they if I can't even trust them in another system. </whine>

Well, if you like the new GUI, then go ahead and use XP. I have been using it and it is very stable, has a lot of features built in that W2K didn't (like support for my digital camera, scanner, USB printer, etc).

I personally like it and you can turn off most of the annoying features. One thing that I had to turn on was the advanced security options from W2K... by default the security options in XP are very dumbed down. :(

I'd say screw it, go for XP. Since you have to go from scratch.

And sorry about your HD probs, I'm just glad I avoided IBM the last 2 times I bought ones.

Is IBM's qaulity slipping?? I have built a LOT of computers with IBM drives & never had a single problem with them.

John,

If you do a search in this forum you will probably see that I used to swear by mine too... and then one day they up and died... both of them. Ah well, guess something has to happen to YOU to make you a believer :(

Ive gotten to the point where I hate IBM with passion. I've had 3 drives from them, and all three died on me. The supposably "low quality" Western Digitals lasted me for years, and I've bought all these drives about 6 months apart in the two year time period; thus it wasnt the shippment. Who knows, maybe its just my luck... :p

Having no real experiance with the "XP revolution" I dont really know. The only thing, and the one thing, that will keep me from using it for quite a while is the new licensing system. I dont have any realy complaints with Microsoft, heck who am I kidding ya I do, but the companies new "agressive" antipirtating system should (hopfully) send some people to the "Linux revolution".

I'd give a vote for XP, but it's not supporting all my speakers for my SB Live (driver problem i assume) so I can't say anything.

However, WDs last way too long for their price, and it's rather amazing, I really can't understand it. I've personally never ran an IBM HD but my WDs are still going strong (100 GB and 80GB) :D
