Halo 1 got so much hype by Xbox players that I nearly laughed myself off my chair when I actually played it. Having said that, I think they may actually include a game with their engine this time around. But HL2 is more of a sure thing to me.

WTF are you talkin about? Halo might not have had the best graphics but it had great gameplay and it was indeed much enjoyable IMO. Surely one of the best FPS I've seen.
Warcrow I didn't expect this from you to say the least. Of course it's your opinion but sucked??
No freakin way man...

Gameplay is what it DIDN'T have. It only had gameplay to a console gamer who had never seen an fps game before. I loved that library map (the archives?), with the copy/pasted floors connected by an elevator. Every floor was exactly the same with the same elevator at the end. Woooo.

Halo did suffer from some repetitive aspects in each level, but was still a great game. Half-Life did provide a better single-player experience, but not by such a wide margin as most of you suggest. Gameplay is there in spades.

The original Halo had hype among XBOX players? It was a launch game, and didn't have nearly the hype of the sequel of either Halo or HL. If you'll remember, Halo was originally a PC game, in which PC fanboys like yourself hyped it to no end as the second coming of christ because of the AI and the particle system.

So any hype that was there came from the PC community. Halo is the greatest game on the XBOX, and Half-Life is arguably the greatest game on the PC. Simple as that.

I didn't say the game was innovative in many ways and I agree with you that most of the maps were repetitive in many points. But this isn't only what gameplay is.
It had very good points too. I liked the AI,the fact that you could only carry 2 weapons only, the vehicles, the big maps and some other things. And I believe that many ppl will agree with me in the fact that they enjoyed the game pretty much. It could never stand to HL,Doom,Daikatana,Deus Ex and some others, but certainly that doesn't make it suck.

I agree with this man! :D

Halo 2 should actually be good though because the dev team didnt have to rush the game out for the launch of the Xbox. Halo 1 was just OK, but it wasnt the pinnicale of console FPSs that all the fanboys made it out to be. I had so many problems with the game, that the only way I could stand to get through the single player mode was to co-op it. I think most people just played the multiplayer of it, and just didnt bother with the single player, or only played for a little while. They were duped! So many levels in Halo 1 were just rooms copy and pasted after another... then they made you do the whole thing backwards. LAME. That being said, I'm prepared to give Halo 2 it's day in court.

Ah yes, the typical AT reaction. If someone likes something you don't, they are a fanboy.

I liked halo a lot. In some aspects it was a lot better than half life. In other aspects it was a lot worse. The multiplayer was lame goldeneye type crap and not even worth playing for an FPS junkie. Unless you mean the coop mode, which was quite good. The single player was not as repetitive as you guys are making it out to be. Within a particular level it may have been slightly repetitive, but the levels were pretty unique. Even within the repetition there were several areas within a level that were very unique and required a lot of planning/tactics/strategy.

The use of vehicles in the game was really good; better than any other game I've seen for sure.

I actually had the opposite reaction. I hated Halo singleplayer, even with coop. However, me and some buddies got the system link going for 4 on 4 teams. It was so easy and incredibly fun. more like awesome actually. the split screen stuff really makes it very exciting. half-life for me was ok. i'm looking very forward to HL2 though. my advice, play hl2 alone, halo2 with friends.

I can't believe you just said that Goldeneye multiplayer was crap. Your opinion of console FPSs now means absolutely nothing to me.

Oh well, I'll live. Goldeneye was highly overrated as a multiplayer game. Maybe as a console game it was good, but at the time all the FPS games for the PC were way, way better technically. I couldn't get over the wolfenstein 3d technology in goldeneye multiplayer. Also there were some guns which were way too powerful. Finally, the controls were really bad compared to modern FPS console games. Really the only thing it had going for it was split screen.

Perfect Dark was better multiplayer, though still suffered from a severe lack of 3d technology.

The reason I said Halo was hyped is because there was a period where if anyone was in the market for a console, there would be a ton of people recommending Xbox. And when the question came down to games, those same ton of people would say Halo. It annoyed the hell out of me that people are suggesting a console based off of such a lackluster game. So when I finally played it on PC, I expected to see an amazing experience when in fact all I got was a shell of an FPS game lacking content in so many ways.

I mean honestly, I can look back at Halo and say, what was good? The vehicles, namely the jeep, which was a ton of fun. The water was very nice. Ok thats about it. The story is cool too but the game doesn't do much to tie you into the story.

Wha... what drew you into any fps story? Half life was just you wandering around. Most of the game had no plot except "you must escape without dying". In halo there was a lot of exposition and dialogue telling you exactly what was going on. The story was a bit hectic in the coop mode but in single player it's very apparent. I guess far cry had some plot, but I considered the story the weakest part of far cry...

Wow....this almost turned into a flame war. As all xbox owners here know, if you own an xbox and enjoy playing on it, you are waiting for halo2. If you own a gaming pc, you're waiting for hl2. I will most definitely grab both, it's just a tough call as to which game I will master first.

Halo 1 was fun at some levels.
the middle levels were ANNOYING. esp. the stupid floods, then the level where you had to go up.. then come back all the way downnnn
the last level was cool though

but i cant wait for HL2, HL1 had an awesome story line.

Halo was a good game. The game sales are there to show for it. Half Life was a good game too. Halo was interesting enough to keep you at it, same goes for Half Life. As for gameplay, I've played both on the PC and Halo on the console too. I found it to be quite hard on the console, especially the flood levels. But it should have been easier for the hardcore console gamer. As for the story, neither of them have too much depth, but enough to keep you interested. Gameplay wise, Halo is just a lot of fun. Varied gameplay at different points, melee attacks, background chatter from the allies, all of those things just made for a fun experience. And the final level, its something you'd find hard to forget. Half Life offered small puzzles, bit of scouting around and if I remember was quite hard the first time I played it.

Like Doom 3, its pretty scary if you just let yourself be immersed. Halo and HL are like that. Let yourself go, or play co-op with somebody and the it just makes for a very interesting experience.

CD.
