So I bought Far Cry the other day. Runs beautifully, not a complaint, etc. However, it's sucking all my spare time! :(

11:10pm here and I've just finished trying to get past the Trigens level in the treetops, one hit from those things and you're dead. Anyone got any tips for them?

But hell, if this is the kind of atmosphere and immersion that we can expect from HL2 and Doom 3 then I'm going to be scared stiff the entire time- playing FC with the lights off and that heart-thumping music going in the background is doing my head in :)

Must. Go. To. Bed...

stay up in the treetops as long as you can. The trigens will attack the other humans before they come after you, so only kill the enemies unless they shoot at you first. Mainly what I did was run my ass off and just shoot whatever attacked me (common sense I guess).

Is the game quite a bit different from the demo? I've only played the demo.

Ah, there's my problem. I went round killing everything that moved first, then had a go at killing Trigens from the treetops. Damn there's a lot of them, and they're too fast.

I agree. There is nothing spectacular about this game. It runs like hell on state of the art systems and is not especially interesting in any way. The AI is especially annoying. It will kill you dead within seconds even on the noob settings which is just stoopid. If I want to be frustrated like this I will load up MOH on a P2-300.

Waste of HD space.

I finished the game in 2 days...

Other than visual effects, this game doesn't have anything good about it...

On the other hand, Call of Duty was one heck of a game. I may install it back and try to finish it at the hardest level.

You really think the game is stupid if you get killed within seconds? ;) PEBKAC ;)

Precisely. IMHO, this game has my attention in the same way that Half-Life originally did. The feeling of immersion is incredible, and I find myself peering around corners all the time, afraid of what's going to jump out at me :)

Far Cry's not for everyone, no game is. I think it's one of those games that you either love or hate.

This game is one of the all-time highest ranking games on gamerankings.com (an aggregate of pro and user reviews)

This is a most amazing game.......but like Half Life or Halo.....some top games aren't for everyone.

Don't ;)
It's a b!tch. I tried and gave up (although it was my fourth play through of the game, from easiest to hardest), I was getting a bit bored.

There are so many ways of playing Far Cry. I like to be sneaky with my MP5 with a silencer. The AI usually swarm to the last location where I use my weapon, so I just shoot, scoot, lay low, then wait for next victim.

I tried the demo with a few different cards and the bare minimum that I would run is something like a GF4 Ti4200. As a matter of fact, the game didn't run all that well until I overclocked the card. It ran pretty good with my 9500 PRO and very good with my 9800 PRO. You really do need the hardware, so you can turn up the settings in order to really enjoy what these guys are talking about with the immersing feel of the game.

You're right. On min settings I could get 20 FPS or so probably with far cry. enough to get through the first few bad guys and bask in the graphics. On Painkiller it's like 10 fps!

Shiet...if you get killed within seconds, that makes you think twice on your next move. It could save your life or could kill you. I love these split second decisions.

How is this an "off topic" convo? This is more on topic in software and games.

My kind of OT :)

But yeah, it's still taking most of my free time, although I'm absolutely determined to get that crappy beige floppy drive spray-painted black today, it looks utterly stupid in a black case with silver drives. Might even get round to doing the DVD/DVDRW drives too :D

Here's to paint everywhere!
