Gag Reflex?

Yeah, someone will probally post a gay comment.

So, I can eat food, and never gag. I stick my finger in my mouth, not even deep back and I start gagging. What the hell is the purpose of this, and why does it happen with non food related objects? Is it just a mental thing? Because I can just float my finger in the middle of my mouth, and still want to gag. Fvcked up..

That's really wierd. Why have you been putting fingers in your mouth? Yes, it's a mental thing. I don't gag. Ever. 😉

Huh, good question. Maybe it's because the finger is dryer and more solid than chewed food. Try holding a piece of dry popcorn at the back of your mouth, it's somewhat gag-inducing.

Yeah, but when I tried it, my finger never touches anything at all. Only the base of my fingers rest on my lips, It's probally mental because I'm not touching anything.

Oh, well, sure, that part's mental, but I figure that's just you being a weird person. But the other part pertains to us normal ppl, so that's what I choose to focus on. How, pray tell, could I help you with some unique effect only you can analyze through introspection? Nay, thine hypotheses mean little to one such as me where bizarre finger levitation is involved.

That article goes over all the aspects of a neurological exam. Moderately interesting.

It includes this

cranial nerve X (vagus nerve)
This nerve is mainly responsible for the ability to swallow, the gag reflex, some taste, and part of speech. The patient may be asked to swallow and a tongue blade may be used to elicit the gag response.

Obviously you brain dictates the difference between something you want to swallow and something you can't/shouldn't be swallowing.
When you say you hold your finger in your mouth, no touching, but feel a gag reflex you are anticipating something entering your throat that shouldn't be and your vagus nerve is just doing its job.

when I went to my new dentist they had to do a set of xrays and man was that an adventure. My gag reflex is pretty strong. 😉 I could hardly let them stick that mouthpiece in there (not a standard one... it takes one side at a time and extends back). They ended up making me hold the reflective piece with my finger instead of using the mouthpiece. My eyes were tearing and everything.
