Too tired to make a comment.

Set him free in exchange for setting the country free?

Probably a good trade.

MOSCOW (Reuters) - A Russian newspaper said Tuesday that Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi was willing to give up power in exchange for security guarantees, citing a high-level Russian official.
The report in the respected daily Kommersant, which did not identify its source, came a day after the search for ways to end the war in Libya dominated Russia's talks with NATO chief Anders Fogh Rasmussen and South African President Jacob Zuma.
"The colonel (Gaddafi) is sending signals that he is prepared to relinquish power in exchange for security guarantees," Kommersant quoted what it called a high-level source in the Russian leadership as saying.
The source said in the report that other nations, potentially including France, were willing to provide those guarantees.
The Kommersant report also said Gaddafi wanted his son Saif al-Islam to be permitted to run in elections if he steps down, a condition the rebels might not accept.
The Libyan government said Monday that it was in talks with opposition figures, but the other side stuck to entrenched positions on Gaddafi's fate.
Saif al-Islam told a French newspaper there was no question of negotiating an end to his father's 42-year rule, and the rebel National Transitional Council backtracked on its statement that Gaddafi could stay in Libya if he gave up all power.

So in a nutshell... He wants to cut the deal that Sadam couldn't.

Not as dumb as he looks.

Edit: On a side note, that would put us in charge of Afghanistan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, Libya, Kuwait, Isreal, UAE...

Interesting... :hmm:

Too late, the Hague wants him it is too late for this (or should be).

We, the world, are teaching these dictators that when things get dire they can pull out literally all the stops, go full savage, and then when it's obvious they've lost they can make a deal and live out the rest of their lives in a mansion?

These are hard issues, because they pit justice against war. Is it more important for one who has done wrong to go to jail, or to save one life, much less many?

If Hitler had offered midway through WWII to surrender with only the condition he could 'go live in a mansion', would saving tens of millions of lives have been worth that?

It's repugnant, but sometimes there's a case to be argued for it.

Of course, another part of the price is the reduction of the deterrence - but it's hard to say how much to value that.

It'd be nice to see wars end early, and not so easy for them to do so when the leaders will be killed (or nowadays at least in prison).

Easy solution: give him his guarantee, have him flee the country, let him live in a mansion. Then, once the opposition finally has the country and a new government is in place, extradite him - hand him back over to them to pay for his crimes.

do you not realize that your own President is just as much of a war criminal and potentially even more so because he would've done the exact same thing had a foreign power invaded America?

Do you not realize this is all over oil? Why would Obama, France, and the U.N. want to help some poor rebels out? The answer is that they never would. I wouldn't be surprised if the "rebels" were actually CIA agents.

Although a deal would be good, allowing Gaddafi's sons or any of his current power-players to be a part of the new government would not be acceptable.

That and they can't retain any assets and it's a deal.

He can go back to his bedouin revolutionary roots and live in a damn tent.

How about we make this deal.

1. We do it your way, but if any one dies while trying to free Libya you have to sacrifice your life.

2. We let him walk away and live on an island some place.

Which do you want now?

It is easy to sit here in my home office and declare that he must stand trial since I am not the one risking my life. But realistically is putting him on trail worth the lives of the people who will die getting us to that point?

Or we could have kept our noses out of this and the rebellion would be crushed months ago with a lot less lives lost. I find it difficult to support a rebillion which a straw poll indicates 20% are fighting against Ghadaffi because they believe he is a Jew. We literally know shit about these people, except that they cant fight their way out of a paper bag even with the west doing the fighting for them.

Too bad more people didn't have this attitude against the Iraq war.

I think the idea would work but he'd have to go live in a country like Saudi Arabia who would shield him from international courts.
