I have a 2 million candlepower spotlight that I've been using lately for spotting deer (hunting season is upon us.) The other day, while my wife was in the van waiting for me, the kids, while in the back seat, decided to have some fun and shine the spotlight at a friend.

Yesterday, we had the van filled with stuff that we were hauling; somehow the spotlight, still stretched to the back seat, was bumped to the on position. Yeah, I'd have noticed in an instant if it was pointing up, but alas, it was face down on the carpet.

Fortunately, last night, I decided to run out to the store. When I got near the van, I could smell a funny burning smell. It took a minute to find the source - there was a hole burned through the mat, through the carpetting, and everything was just a blackened circle of smoldering goo.

Anyone have any idea how much it is to repair a big burn hole? (about the same size as a 2 million candlepower spotlight, lol) We were debating turning it in on insurance; the van smells horrible inside, although it was a little bit better this morning. But, of course, we don't want our insurance jacked up to more than the cost of repairs (over the course of a couple years)

Thanks.

I think we were pretty lucky that it didn't ignite. So, I'm quite happy that it "wasn't as bad as it could have been" especially since the van was parked only a couple feet from the barn (we were hauling feed for the animals)

not necessarily. Some states maybe, bot mostly only if you have a gun with you too...

Lots of guys do it to locate deer to hunt during the daylight. Just to get a general idea of what fields the deer go to at night, roads they cross, things like that.

In NY, It's illegal to spotlight within 500 ft of a dwelling unless you have the owner's permission. You may not use a spotlight if you have a gun in the car, or a bow, unless the bow is unstrung. Either may be present, if locked in the trunk.

But, like Cheetah said, it's used to locate specific areas to hunt, or get a better idea of what's there. I have a buck that I've been tracking for a week or so - scrapes, rubs... I know a lot of his routine, many of his paths he takes, but I've never seen him. I've spotlighted in his area a few times, but have never seen a buck in the area. There's really no way I can know if I'm hunting a spike deer, or a 10 point based on what I have available for evidence right now. Regardless, it's meat in the freezer. But, knowing what I'm looking for while hunting may aid me. If there's a 10 point in that general area, I'll ignore does. But, if it's just a spike, I'll have to pay more attention to the does to see if they are the buck. Then again, if it's a spike, I probably wouldn't care either way which one I harvested for the freezer.
