Present:
GA7VRXP ver 2.0 On attempted boot with all items disconnected expect video card and MB. On plugging in power Chip fan spins 2 secs and stops. Pushing power on will rotate chip fan 3-4 secs, then stops. Amber light on MB stays lit. Pushing power sw for 5 secs turns off power to board and lite goes out. I'm assumig bad board (got 5 years of it) same results after 5-6 tries...

Replacement. Not an overclocker. Not an extreme gamer.
System:
GA7VRXP, 512MB ram
Older Xtasy Nvidia Graphics so maybe time for e-pci?
2x80 MB Maxtor HD drives
Win XP Pro SP2
HP DVD drive 200i
Several USB 2.0 devices (printers, AIO printer, PDA hookup)
1 parallel printer.

Looking at Asus A8NE, A8 SLI (not deluuxe) maybe Ultra-D LAN Party or ?

-Need matching budget memory and graphics card suggestions
-Planning on Athlon 64 3000, maybe higher.
-Thermaltake Tsunami VA4300SNA cooler?

Reuse old Win XP installation by trying to boot from the existing HD, then use XP to Repair?
Thanks for help!

Your best chance to reuse the old WinXP installation is to buy a new board with the same chipset manufacturer as the GA7VRXP. I think that has a via chipset, so you would look at A64 boards with a via chipset.

If you've got your heart set on an nForce board, be prepared to go through some hassles reusing the old XP install.

Thanks for taking time to reply. The mb choices are humongous!

What MB to just replace? Vs How much trouble with Win XP?

Just ported it all over from an old computer 1 year ago....

Thanks !

IMO the socket 754's are a bargain. check those out on newegg.

as for windows setup, i'd do a new one.

Thanks for the reply. Looks like I'll have to wing it and reinstall windows with an upgraded MB, mem, vid & etc.
Was hping to find a rplacement KT333 and recover and back up my hd. Have one less than a week old in Norton Ghost on a seprate HD.

Thank you,

It might not be a bad idea to get a replacement KT333 board, then you've got a mobo cpu ram set to sell or give to a relative - and you can boot your current installation to remove all the device drivers so you can move it over to an nForce board.

Actually just today I was working with a computer with a dead nForce2 motherboard. I hooked the harddrive up to another machine I have with an nForce2 board and removed all the drivers - then put in a brand new KM400 board and XP booted up & peformed like a champ.

Thanks!

Got a A7V400 MX. Transferred everything to new system. No go.

It was the chip. Fan wouldn;t spin, etc....

Got a cheapie Athlon 2500 Barton, put it in and off and running. Went throug coupe hundred bucks and 20+ hours, and it turned out to be the chip...

Thanks for the ideas! They worked!

Bought a new A7V400 for ultra cheap, got a real steal deal on a Athlon XP barton 2500. Used all the old components excpet splurging for a Evga 6800 agp. I'll put of the 939 stuf i wanted for a while.
Had a few windows problems. But...

Ended up just blowing off the extra few days of data since i probably kept up with my laptop.
Got a new HD, put windows on it, sp2, mb drivers, video drivers, new ide drivers (which by the way solved my Norton Ghost systray problem. Via has a set that solves the Ghost 9.0 problem - it works!)

reloaded my last good backup, updated eveything, and am up and running!
Thanks for the ideas & help.

that barton 2500 is a great chip. I've been running it for 2.5 years with 0 problems
