So, I'll be competing in the state champs on Saturday in the Pro/1/2/3 competition. The course is a 6.4 mile loop east of Atlanta that we'll be doing 11 times for approx 72 miles. I'd heard from my teammates that the course was pretty hilly.....okay, I can deal with that.

Today, I happen to stumble across a map and profile of the course someone did with Topo. (.pdf)

Climbing per lap: 718 feet

Number of laps: 11

Total climbing: 7,898 feet. :Q:Q

On top of that, our race starts at noon and the current forecast is for temps in the high 80s. This is going to be a deathmarch.

Someone tell me why I pay to do this stuff again? :p

Here's a short clip of my group going over the top of the main climb on the course.

I'm buried somewhere in the middle of the main group. Thanks to Minendo for the vid host. :)

My wife will be there to hand up water bottles and food to me, so hopefully I'll have some pics and/or a short vid to upload.

thats a nice graph/map.

my advice is to install a small but powerful motor on your bike. :D

good luck dude! looks like there is only one hill longer than a mile, and most are short, but extremely steep grades. sounds like a recipe for vomit. :D

I seriously doubt I'll be kicking anyone's ass since I'm racing against the two categories above me (I'm a 3) AND the pros. As luck would have it, we have a pro team (Jittery Joe's) based in Athens, which is about 40 min from the course. You may have heard of these guys since their team leader dropped Lance on a big climb in the Tour de Georgia......and I'm going to be racing against them.

The suckage will be strong with this one. :p

Sweet, thanks. She'll just be using my A70 so should just be relatively small .AVI files. The pics can just go on bbzzdd.

Cheers for a good looking and certainly challenging course

I love vertical exaggeration on cross sections.

remember to stay hydrated and have a big pasta meal right before the race ;)
Actually, I always have Waffle House before a big race. I won my first race after a WH breakfast years ago so now I'm kinda superstitious about it. :p

I'm just being realistic. These guys are pros. I have a real job. They're going to kick my ass. :p

My job for the day is to work for my teammate, so it doesn't really matter what the pros do. Who knows, maybe I'll get lucky and get into an early breakaway that actually sticks.

Gotcha. Forgot that it is a team race for the most part. I wouldn't be so confident going in against a bunch of pros (one being a guy that Lance on a climb :Q) either. Who knows...this could be the start of the next Lance Armstrong! Fausto Armstrong!

Hehe...we'll see. I'm pretty much looking at this year as a "rebuilding" year since I didn't really do jack-squat on the bike last year. If I can take some of my fitness (and weight loss) from this year into next season, I should be a bit more competitive on courses like this since I'm not starting from basically ground zero in January.
