I have been having this problem for a while, reason for not trying to fix earlier is I'm a bit lazy. It wasn't my primary system until about the last 6 weeks, now it is really getting under my skin.

Sometimes this thing just simply stops recognizing it has an audio controller. Sometimes when this happens, I can be listening to music (local MP3s) through Windows MP 9 and browsing with IE7. Then all of a sudden there is some sort of crash (not announced by the OS). When I try to select new music, I get this response, "Windows Media Player cannot play the file because there is a problem with your sound device. There may not be a sound device installed on your computer, it may be in use by another program, or it may not be functioning properly."

Nothing is muted, the volumes of the OS and WMP are well above 0.

I go into Device Manager and there is nothing (still) with a yellow triangle, exclamation point, or red X. The device "Realtek High Definition Audio" appears to be fine. I have recently updated the audio to the latest version supplied by Gigabyte, R2.00. That resulted in basically the same thing, frequent audio failures about once each day of use. I have not played a game in about 4 weeks (BF2).

When this problem shows up I find a familiar entry in the application event viewer (nothing correlated in the system events) when audio stops working.

?Faulting application , version 0.0.0.0, faulting module unknown, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00000000.

GA-P35-DS3L Rev 2.0, Intel E4300, XP SP2 (otherwise fully patched). F7 BIOS, F8 says it is an update for CPU Microcode. The latest BIOS option is a beta. The chipset drivers haven't been updated for nearly a year, and they are the revision I believe I an currently running.

Please guide me to a permanent resolution. help me, I switched from Asus due to PATA controller failure.
